Cricket 1911
206 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. J une 3, 1911. LE ICESTERSH IRE y. KENT . Played at Leicester on May 25, 26 and 27. Kent won by nine wickets. As the result of some remarkable cricket Kent, after having the worst of the play for over two days, won by nine wickets. On a good wicket on the first day, against bowling which never seemed difficult, the home side took four hours forty minutes to score 270. Wood, who carried his bat through the innings, showed very strong defence: when 50 he was injured and obliged to retire for 40 m inutes. B ain restricted Frid ay’s play to 80 minutes, and on the third morning Kent found themselves 08 behind on the first innings, no-one doing much after Seymour left. Blythe was alm ost unplayable when Leicestershire went in again, four being out for 9, six for 11 and the whole side dism issed for 26 in 45 m inutes. Requiring 100 to win, Kent made the runs for the loss of D illon. Seymour, hitting brilliantly, scored 56 of the last 76 in 55 m inutes. Score and a n a ly sis:— L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . Total (7 wkts) M IDDLESEX v. LANCASH IRE . Played at Lo rd ’s on May 25, 26 and 27. Middlesex won by an innings and 1 1 runs. Lancashire, although enjoying the services of Brearley and Spooner for the first time during the season, were without John Tyldesley and A. Hartley and suffered defeat by an innings. At one time in their first innings they had made 170 with only Spooner out, but A. E . Litteljohn took eight wickets whilst only 19 runs were made from him and the total was only 2 12 . The only real stand of the innings was by Makepeace and Tyldesley (W.), who added 130 in 110 minutes. Middlesex, although having two wickets down for 28, went right a-head and gained a lead of 2 4 1. W arner and Hearne (J. W .), by faultless cricket, added 14 7 for the third wicket and E . S. Litteljohn and Anson put on 120 for the eighth. Litteljohn batted three hours and-a-half for 105, offering no chance until 10 1. He showed him self strong to the on and hit thirteen 4’s. Lancashire never seemed likely to escape defeat, though Makepeace and Sharp made 79 together and Garnett and McLeod played bright cricket. The last-named hit a ball over the grand stand. A. K . Litte'john again bowled with pronounced success. Score and a n a ly sis:— L a n c a s h ir e . First innings. R. H. Spooner, b Tarrant......................... Makepeace, c Saville, b A. R.
