Cricket 1911

J une 3, 1911. CKICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. 205 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Played at B ristol on May 25, 26 and 27. Notts won by an innings and 15 5 runs. Notts went ahead from the start and won with the greatest ease. Their success was practically assured when, on the first day, they ran up 506 for six wickets in five and a-half hours on a perfect pitch. After two men were out for 67 the brothers Gunn put on 193 logether in 140 mimutes, and John subsequently added 14 3 (in 90 minutes) with Payton and 60 (in 20 minutes) with Alletson. George Gunn was m issed when 12 5 but his brother’s play was faultless : the former bit a 5 and seventeen 4’s and the latter nineteen 4’s. Alletson, hitting four 6 ’s and four 4’s, claimed 60 of the 80 runs made whilst in, and Oates aud Riley subsequently put on 59 together. In all, Notts were batting for 6 hours 40 minutes. None of the Gloucestershire men could make much headway when their turn came to bat, though Brown played sound cricket for a couple of hours in his first innings, and Jessop scored 50 out of 75 in an hour and a-quarter. OXFORD UN IVER S ITY v. WORCESTERSHIRE . Played at Oxford on May 25, 26 and 27. Worcestershire won by six wickets. In scoring 3 13 in three and a-half hours on the first day, the University did better than at one time seemed likely, for five wickets went down for 130. Knott, however, subsequently made 66 not out in 90 minutes, hitting seven 4’s, and there were other double-figure scores. For their lead of 46 the County owed most to Simpson- Hayward, who, driving very powerfully, made 130 in two hours he was missed ju st after reaching three-figures, hit two 6 ’s and 17 4’s and put on 8 1 for the sixth wicket in 35 minutes with Davis. Although there had been rain, weak batting must be held cbiefly responsible for Oxford’s small second total of 140. When Worces tershire went in to get 95, Arnold played a fine game, batting 80 minutes for 63 not out and hitting eight 4’s. Score and analysis :— O x f o r d U n iv e r s it y . First innings. B. H. YORKSHIRE . Played at Chesterfield on May 25, 26 and 27. Yorkshire won by an innings and 75 runs. After their success at Manchester, D erbyshire’s play in this match was most disappointing. Although having first innings on a good wicket they could score only 2 15. Morton and Forester added 10 1 together and Oliver and Boot 56. Cadman's dism issal was curious : in bending to avoid a full-pitch from Booth he was struck on the back of the neck and given out lbw. Yorkshire’s second wicket fell at 68 , but a stand of 193 by Denton and Drake then put the side ahead. Denton batted about 150 minutes for his attractive 1 13 , made no m istake and hit seventeen 4’s. Drake made a 6 and eighteen 4’s during the 225 minutes he batted, was missed when 57, 109 and 12 3 and added 64 with H irst and 76 with Booth. B ain during Friday night destroyed any chance Derbyshire might have had of saving the game. Bhodes took seven wickets for 16 runs, dism issing three men in the course of an over.
