M ay 2?, 1911. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 193 CAMBRIDGE UN IVERS ITY v. SUSSEX. Played at Cambridge on May 22, 23 and 24. Cambridge University won by 42 runs. The whole of Monday was devoted by Sussex to playing an innings of 405. At one time, notwithstanding a partnership of 106 by Vine and Killiek, such a total seemed unlikely; but the ‘ t a il’ played well, Cox adding 12 5 with Dowling (a Carthusian Freshman) and 85 with Leach. Cox offered no chance duriDg the 140 minutes he was in and hit fourteen 4’s. Two capital innings were played by Mulholland on Tuesday, when the University were engaged in an uphill struggle. He hit nine 4's in his first innings and six in his second. On the third day Saville and Falcon stayed together until they had added 129 for the fourth wicket. Saville made his runs in 150 m inutes, and after he had played-on Prest helped to put on 83. Falcon played delightful cricket for his 134, and hit ten 4’s, but when 77 was missed at third man. Sussex were set 280 to win and had three hours before them. In 30 minutes Vine and Robert Relf made 60, 48 of them coming from Cowie in four overs. The pair gave the side a splendid start, but no-one else reached 30, Kidd bowling with such effect that he took his last seven wickets for 14 . Score and an alysis: — S u ss e x . First innings. DERBYSH IRE . Played at Manchester on May 22, 23 and 24. Derbyshire won by two runs. After an absence in Argentina of six years, H. G. Garnett reappeared for Lancashire, who were, however, in the absence of John Tyldesley and A. Hartley, not at full strength. Derbyshire took four hours to score 207, the only time during ihe innings that runs came at all freely being whilst Morton and Forester added 77. Lancashire played a brighter game, but at the end of the day had three men out for 98. On Tuesday Warren bowled with such success that Derbyshire obtained a lead of 53 on the innings, and by the time stumps were drawn were 245 runs ahead with four wickets in hand. Forester and Chapman put on 79 in 55 minutes after four men were out for 80, their stand being invaluable. The third day’s play saw a splendid struggle, the visitors winning amid great excitement by a couple of runs. Oliver hit ten 4’s in his most serviceable 56 and Lancashire had 808 to make. A bad start was made, Makepeace and the two Tyldesleys being out for 33. Sharp and Heap put on 72 in an hour, but subsequently Garnett alone did much. During the afternoon there was an interval of 15 minutes during Dr. E. M. Grace’s funeral. Score and analysis :— D erbyshire . First innings.
