M ay 27, 19 LI. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 191 W ARW ICK SH IR E y . LEICESTERSHIRE . Played at Edgbaston on May 22, 23 and 24. W arwickshire won by nine wickets. Inasmuch as they gained a lead of 28 with three wickets in hand, the home side gained an advantage on the opening day. Only Lord and King did much for Leicestershire, although the wicket was in good order. Sharp, who helped the former to put on 58, played a ball from Field on to his wicket without removing a bail. Warwickshire owed the advantage they obtained chiefly to a stand of 7 1 by L illey and Quaife, who was run out through the bowler (Shipman) deflecting a return drive on to the wicket whilst the batsman was out of his ground. Tuesday’s cricket saw Leicestershire run up 3 17 and set W arwickshire 266, of which number 4 1 had been obtained without loss before stumps were drawn. There were three good stands in the course of the innings, Wood and Knight making 89 for the first wicket, Knight and Whitehead 108 for the second and the last named and Coe 76 for the fifth. Knight offered no chance, but Whitehead was missed three times— when 13 , 14 and 65. The home side accomplished a fine performance on Wednesday when they pulled off the game by nine wickets. Lilley and Kinneir remained together until 186, when Lilley played-on after batting 155 minutes. The remaining 82 runs were then hit off by Kinneir and Charlesworth and Warwickshire won as stated. Everything was in favour of Kent when stumps were drawn on Monday, the side scoring 300 and getting six Middlesex men out for 79. Nine of the visitors, despite some accurate and clever bowling by Litteljohn, reached double-figures. Tarrant played a capital game, and at the end of the day claimed 61 of the 74 runs obtained from the bat. Altogether, he made 72 out of 112 and his stand with Wormald of 62 was the ouly one of any consequence in the innings. Preferring to bat again, Kent scored 294 for nine wickets and declared. Humphreys and Seymour added 97 for the second wicket and the latter and Hutchings 72 for the third. U seful scores were subsequently made by Huish, Fairservice and Blythe, but Humphreys and Seymour clearly carried off the honours. W ith 452 to win, Middlesex made 33 without loss by Tuesday night. On the third day Warner and Tarrant took the score to 122, when the latter was lbw to Day. W ith Hendren in the scoring slowed down, but at lunch the total was 15 5 with only one man out. Afterwards Day, as though to atone for his batting failure, carried all before him , only W arner playing him with much confidence. He bowls a fastish ball, and in the innings took eight wickets for 49. Warner made 109 out of 2 15 in 200 minutes without a chance. H is chief hits were thirteen 4’s. During the funeral of Dr. E . M. Grace the flag was lowered half-m ast. Score and analysis :— K ent . First innings. E. W. Dillon, c Hearne (J. W.), b Tarrant ... 35 Humphreys, b Hearne (J.
