Cricket 1911

190 CEICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 27, 1911. too, he had only secured 1 1 wickets ; against the men from the broad-acred shire he took 8 for 122. Last season Mr. Chaplin gave him quite a considerable amount of work at the crease. His best performance was against Essex at Hove, when he had 11 for 112 in the match —8 for 79 in the first innings. F o l l o w e r s of the game cannot state that this week’s cricket has been without incident, and plenty of it, for in addition to the features already mentioned we have seen Hayward playing the part of Atlas to the Surrey Eleven, E. L. Kidd bringing success to his side by means of a wonderful bowling per formance, Warwickshire obtaining a victory in fine style over Leicestershire and Derbyshire gaining the verdict over Lanca shire at Old Trafford. All these events, save the first, were out of the ordinary, the most remarkable being perhaps the downfall of Lancashire. But what charm would cricket possess if the strongest sides always won ? Many of what are generally regarded as the weaker counties needed a tonic when the season started and several of them have already received it. May they continue to prosper !
