Cambridge University won by ten wickets. On the second day Manners, owing to an injury, was unable to bat, only nine wickets thus falling in Gloucestershire’s second innings, which closed for 67. The University were set 74 to win, and in less than an hour Mulholland and Collins obtained the runs without being parted. Both played faultless cricket. On the opening day, when sixteen wickets fell for 277 runs, Yorkshire did not outplay their opponents to any very pronounced extent, but they went right ahead afterwards and, leaving Somerset with 434 to win, won easily by nearly 300 runs. E very player reached double-figures in Yorkshire’s second innings, Denton, missed when 13 , 62 and 1 12 , being chief scorer with 120, made in 150 minutes Pulling and driving with much power and certainty he hit two 6 's, a 5 and fourteen 4’s. He and Drake added G3 together in 35 minutes and, at the end of the afternoon against tired bowling, Haigh and Booth put on 7 1 in 55 minutes. In the second innings of Somerset, in which (owing to injuries) only seven wickets fell, Lew is made G9 in an hour, and with Daniell added 94 in 55 m inutes. He hit a six and seven 4’s. On the first afternoon the re-start was delayed five minutes out of respect to Murdoch’s memory. Everything on the first day was dwarfed by the spendid innings by Haywood and Thompson, wbo, coming together when six men were out for 69, added 222 in two hours and a-half. Each player batted three hours without a mistake, Thompson hitting two 6 ’s and eleven 4’s and Haywrood a 6 and eighteen 4’s. During the whole of Monday Gloucestershire were playing an uphill game, being dismissed for 122 and compelled to follow-on. In their second innings h alf the side were out for 68 , but Jessop and Dipper added 53 and the latter and Huggins 64. Jessop, hitting a 6 and eight 4’s, played a quieter game than usual and took 50 minutes to obtain his runs. On Tuesday the game was soon over.
