Cricket 1911

M ay 27, 1911. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 181 SUSSEX Y. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Played at Brighton on May 18, 19 and 20. REMARKABLE HITTING BY ALLETSON. Drawn. Notts made such a good start in this match, Jones and George Gunn adding 89 in an hour for the second wicket and the latter and John Gunn 73 in 50 minutes for the fourth, that 190 were on the board with only four men out. A total of about 350 seemed in prospect, but K illick, going on at 193, obtained five of the last six wickets for 14 and the innings closed for 238. The interval was extended as a mark of respect to Murdoch, whose funeral was taking place in London. The Sussex batting also broke down at one point, for although Vine made 74 for the first wicket with the younger Ilelf and added 64 for the second with Heygate, half the side were out for 198. Vine played a sound innings of 77, which lasted two hours and a-quarter and contained six 4’s. K illick, however, going in later than usual, played the best cricket of the side : he made 81 in 100 minutes without a mistake, hitting well all round, and added 74 with Tudor and 70 with Leach. Only Albert E elf and Vincett failed to reach double-figures, and the Sussex lead amounted to 176. Going in again, Notts lost Jones in the first over, but Iremonger found such a useful partner in George Gunn that the second wicket put on 12 2 in 85 m inutes. Then for a time matters went in favour of the home side and a tame conclusion seemed in prospect. With seven wickets down for 185 Alletson weut in and by lunch had made 47, he and Lee adding 73 for the eighth wicket in 40 minutes. After the interval he hit so fiercely that he actually claimed 142 of the 152 put on for the last wicket in 40 m inutes. He punished Killick for 22 in one over and for 34 in another, obtained 1 15 from seven consecutive overs, and at one period after lunch made 109 out of 114 . (See Gossip.) In all, he made 189 out of 227 in an hour and a-half, hitting eight 6’s and twenty-three 4’s. He offered two chances—neither easy— when 25 and 42. Sussex were left with 237 to win and, although Vine and R elf (U.K.) made 1 12 for the first wicket, the side afterwards had all they could manage to stave off defeat. Score and analysis :— N otts . Played at Bournville on May 18 , 19 and 20. Worcestershire won by two wickets. Worcestershire have every reason to be satisfied with what they did in this match for, taking the field without a member of the Foster fam ily in their side, they won with a couple of wickets to spare after being set 300 to win. Surrey, on a good wicket, should have made more than 250 in their first innings. Hobbs, who hit seven 4’s in making 84 out of 196 in 140 minut< s, found a useful partner in Hayes, who helped to add 78 for the second wicket, and at the end of the innings Sm ith scored 30 out of 36 in 20 minutes. On the first day the luncheon interval was prolonged whilst Murdoch’s funeral was taking place, an earlier start the next morning being agreed upon in consequence. Burns and Bovvley, in the first innings of the home side, added 60 for the fourth wicket, the former, who hit a 6 and ten 4’s, obtaining his 63 in an hour and a-half. The rest of the side did little, owing to the weather breaking, and Surrey led by 52. Eight of the visitors reached double figures when they went in again, and Worcestershire were set 300 to win. At lunch the score was 60 for two, but Pearson and Burns added 94 for the third wicket in 55 minutes, and with the former receiving good help also from Turner, Simpson-Hayward and Burrows the runs were obtained with a couple of wickets to spare. Burns, hittiDg with great vigour, reached 50 out of 68 in three-quarters of an hour, and obtained 70 of the 94 put on for the third partnership in 55 minutes. Pearson played a steady and most valuable innings which lasted just over three hours and three-quarters. He offered no chance. Score and a n a ly sis:— S urrey . First innings. Second innings.
