Cricket 1911
174 C felCKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OP THE GAME. M ay 20, 1911. OXFORD U N IVER S ITY v. SURREY . Played at Oxford on May 15, 16 and 17. Surrey won by 141 runs. Although without several of their best players Surrey managed to obtain a useful advantage on the opening day, getting nine University wickets down for 139 after completing an innings for 202. A place in the Oxford side could not be found for Knott, and, owing to schools, neither LeConteur nor Pawson appeared. The chief feature of a day of very ordinary cricket was an attractive partnership by Platt and Leveson-Gower after Surrey’s seventh wicket had fallen at 117. Lagden took six wickets in the innings, but, although fast, was erratic. The University had two men out without a run, and only Braddell, who scored 42 of the 46 added for the seventh wicket, showed any command over the attack. In their second innings the county lost Hayward and Hayes for 25, but Hobbs and Ducat added 77 for the third wicket. Hobbs, sixth out, made 63 out of 154 in 115 minutes, hitting six 4’s. Spring ran up 46 in 50 minutes and the University were set 280 to win. Hobbs met with pronounced success with his bowling, taking seven wickets for 56 in a total of 138. Twining batted just over two hours for his chanceless innings of 63. Score and analysis :— S u r r e y . First innings. Hayward, c Vidler, b Lagden................. Notts won by ten wickets. Euns were always difficult to make on Monday at Trent Bridge, but Notts, thanks chiefly to A. O. Jones and Iremonger, who made 93 for the first wicket in 50 minutes, wound up with a lead of 37 with half their wickets in hand. The former hit a 6 and eight 4’s in a vigorous and faultless display. George Gunn subsequently played sound cricket and at the end of the day carried out his bat for 52. The Leicestershire batting was very uneven, for although Wood and Knight made 42 for the first wicket and Whitehead and King added 43 for the third only Jayes of the other players reached double-figures. On the second day Notts gained a lead of 220, George Gunn and Whysall putting on 116 for the sixth wicket and Lee and Oates 71 for the ninth. Gunn m ale his runs in 200 minutes and was caught off a full-pitch : he hit a 5 and five 4’s and made his runs without a mistake. The visitors gave a much improved display when they iwent in again, Knight [being seen to great advantage. He made 50 for the first wicket with Wood and added 71 for the fourth with Sharp ; his 113 were made out of 236 in 195 minutes without a mistake, though when 91 he played-on without removing a bail. He hit a 6 and six 4’s. Score and analysis — L eicestersh ire . First iuningB. C. J. B. Wood, b Gunn (J.) ...................
