Cricket 1911

M a y 20,1911. CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 173 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE . Played at Northampton on May 15 and 16. Lancashire won by 246 runs. The fact that twenty-two wickets fell on Monday for 262 runs in less than six hours is evidence that the ground had not recovered from the heavy ruin of the previous day. The bowlers had every thing in their favour, and East and Cook came out with remarkable figures. The longest stand of the day was 52 by Makepeace and Sharp. Both fell to East who, going on at 69, took seven of the last eight wickets for 11 runs. For the home side Vials and W . H. Denton made 30 for the first wicket and Seymour scored 24 out of 25 in a-quarter of an hour, but the rest did little and the side were 19 behind on the innings. The absence of Smith, who has not yet returned from the West Indies, handicapped them severely. In the last 80 minutes of the day Lancashire, goiug in the second time, made 53 for two wickets, and on Tuesday put themselves in a winning position by taking the total to 284. Tyldesley and Sharp remained together until they had put on 84 for the third wicket, and after the latter’ s dismissal Heap helped to add 91 for the fourth. Tyldesley upon reaching three-figures received a severe blow on the left arm and almost immediately afterwards was bowled for 106 made out of 213 in three hours and a-quarter without a mistake. His cutting and driving were excellent and he hit a 6 and ten 4’s. Heap batted for 135 minutes and, like his brilliant partner, hit ten 4’s. Northants were set 304 to win and collapsed for 57, the innings being over in 90 minutes. Score and analysis:— L an cash ire . First innings. A. Hai-tley, c and b Thompson.......................... Yorkshire had all the best of the cricket on Monday, when, after scoring 250, they dismissed Derbyshire for 61. For their useful total the home side owed almost everything to Rhodes and Denton, who put on 142 for the second wicket in 95 minutes. Neither player gave a chance, but the former was certainly fortunate in some of his strokes through the slips. Denton hit six 4’s, and Rhodes, who obtained his first 50 out of 72 in 55 minutes and was fifth out, at 205, fifteen 4's. Against Hirst and Booth Derbyshire had six men out for 12, but a sound innings of 24 by Wickstead, a left- handed newcomer, saved the side from a complete collapse. In the follow-on Cadman batted well for 95 minutes, but the last five wickets fell for 12 , leaving Yorkshire successful by the margin stated.
