Cricket 1911

M a y 20, 1911. CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 163 LANCASH IRE y . WARW ICKSH IRE . Played at Manchester on May 11, 12 and 13. Warwickshire won by 137 runs. Warwickshire, after leading by 46 on the first innings, went ahead in such style that on the third morning they were 407 runs on with a couple of wickets in hand. On the first, when each side completed an innings, only 356 runs were made on a fast pitch for twenty wickets. Cowan played a valuable game, adding 41 with Baker and 48 with Smith, and carrying out his bat for 51 after batting an hour and a-quarter. During the innings both Heap and Whitehead obtained two wickets with consecutive balls. So true was the Warwickshire bowling that the home side had six men out for 69. McLeod, hitting seven 4’s, then made 63 out of 92 in an hour and a-quarter, and the total reached 155. When the visitors went in again Kinneir played a very useful innings of 62, but every thing was dwarfed by the batting of Charlesworth and Quaife, who added 185 for the fourth wicket in two hours. The latter, by skilful cricket, obtained 90 in 150 minutes, whilst Charlesworth, hitting ten 4’s, most of them drives, scored 110 out of 200 in two hours and a-quarter without a mistake. Lancashire’s task was a very formid able one, especially after they had lost Makepeace and John Tyldesley for 48. Hartley batted capitally for an hour and a-half, and with Sharp added 60 for the third wicket, but, this notwith standing, six men were out for 165. Heap played attractive cricket for a couple of hours, and with Hornby put on 63 in 40 minutes, but Warwickshire’s success was never in doubt. Score and analysis :— W arw ic k sh ir e . First innings. HAMPSH IRE v. SOMERSET. Played at Southampton on May 11, 12 and 13. Drawn. Somerset gave a surprisingly good display in this match, scoring almost 700 runs in their two innings and having none the worst of tbe game. In the first innings Braund, playing very steadily, batted an hour and three quarters for 49—he made 45 with Hardy for tbe first wicket and added 111 with Deane for the third in 85 minutes. The last-named, hitting freely—he made thirteen 4’s—claimed 74 of the number mentioned. Hill made his 65 in an hour, his chief hits being two 6 ’s (out of the ground) and eight 4’s, and with Poyntz put on 111 for the seventh partnership. There were two long stands in Hampshire’s innings also, Stone and Kennedy adding 142 for the second wicket in an hour and-a-half and Mead and Brown 156 for the fifth in 110 minutes. Mead played faultless cricket for his 100 and, scoring well all round, hit thirteen 4’s, but Stone when 50 was missed twice—by Braund and Hill—in the course of an over from Robson. The later players obtained useful scores, and Hampshire secured a lead of 33 on the innings. When Somerset went in again, Daniell played a fine game, going in first and carrying out his bat for 129. He hit eleven 4’s, was at the wicket for four hours and-a-quarter and offered only one chance—when 36. W ith Hardy he put on 51 in half-an-hour and with Poyntz added 129 for the seventh wicket in 75 minutes, the latter partnership saving the side from any possibility of defeat.
