Cricket 1911

162 CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OP THE GAME. M ay 20,1911. E SSE X v. YORKSH IRE . Played at Leyton on May 11, 12 and 13. Essex won by 131 runs. In their first match of the season, and their first under the captaincy of Mr. Douglas, Essex gave a capital display, and, after being behind on the first innings, won by over a hundred runs. Yorkshire certainly had to bat a second time on a treacherous wicket, but for all that Essex played a winning game in fine style, their fielding being very good indeed. Two most useful partnerships marked the first innings of Essex, Douglas and Fane making 63 together and McGahey and Tremlin adding 55. W ilson defended very strongly when Yorkshire went in, taking two hours and a-quarter to make 36 : but he added 43 with Drake and 52 with Hirst, and had much to do with his side leading on the innings. By the end of the second day Essex, going in again, made 162 for three wickets in two hours and a-half, Douglas and Fane making 109 for the first wicket and the latter and Freeman adding 45 for the second. On the third morning 95 were added in 100 minutes, and then the innings closed, leaving Yorkshire with 251 to win— a very heavy task, as the wicket was. Wilson and Denton were out for 2 before lunch, and the only stand of any account make by the side was during the time Drake and Hirst were together, when 53 were put on in half-an-hour. Tremlin obtained four wickets for a fraction over four runs each. Score and analysis :— E ssex . First innings. J. W. H. T. Surrey won by ten wickets. In one respect Surrey’s victory was surprising, seeing that it was as late as half-past twelve on the second day that Leicestershire lost their second wicket in their first innings with the total 255. On the opening day the side made 162 for the loss of Knight, who was bowled at 16, in just over two hours, a heavy thunder-storm restrict ing play to that period. Whitehead, hitting splendidly all round, claimed 150 of the 239 runs added for the second wicket in two hours and three-quarters: he made his runs without a chance, hit a 6 (over the ring, off Smith) and twenty-five 4’s, and was at last caught off a long-hop. Wood, seventh out (at 304), batted carefully for a little over four hours, and might have been caught when 26 and again when 48, but neither chance was an easy one. On the second morning Rushby slipped whilst bowling, and strained his back so severely that he was unable to complete the over or to bowl again during the innings. Hitch, as it happened, did everything necessary, obtaining five of the last six wickets in 20 balls for 10 runs. The innings closed for 311, and of the 299 runs scored from the bat Wood and Whitehead were responsible for as many as 257. By bright cricket Surrey made 302 for nine wickets in just over three hours and a-half before stumps were drawn. Hayward and Hobbs gave the side a good start by scoring 88 for the first wicket in 50 minutes, and Ducat subsequently assisted the former to add 73 for the third in similar time. Hayward made his 84 out of 157 in an hour and three-quarters and hit two 6 ’s and eight 4’s. A good catch at the wicket brought his free display to an end. Davis and Hitch, during the 25 minutes they were in partnership, put on 47, and a most useful stand of 55 by Strudwick and Rushby gave Surrey the lead on the first innings. Leicestershire collapsed completely on a treacherous pitch after lunch on the third day, only Coe reaching double-figures and the side being out in an hour and a-quarter for 60. Surrey then obtained the few runs necessary to win without loss before the effects of the roller had worn off. Score and analysis :— L eicestersh ire . First innings. C. J. B.
