Cricket 1911
148 CR ICK ET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 13,1911. M.C.C. AND GROUND v. YORKSH IRE . Played at Lord’s on May 8 , 9 and 10. Yorkshire won by 45 runs. Some most interesting cricket was seen at Lord’s on Monday, the home f-ide getting rid of Yorkshire for 2(55 and replying with 113 for one wicket. The weather and wicket were splendid, the fielding was of a high staudard and some good bowling (especially by Douglas) was seen. Wilson and Rhodes made 134 for Yorkshire’s first wicket, the former hitting so freely that he obtained his 87 in 85 minutes : his chief strokes were a 6 and thirteen 4’s, but he was missed quite early in his innings and again when G2. Rhodes, sixth out (at 204), played a sounder and slower game, his stay at the wicket lasting 150 minutes, but no other player reached 30. At the end of the day Tarrant and Mead, showing excellent form, put on 79 together without being parted after Warner had been bowled by Hirst at 34. Altogether they added 191 for the second wicket in 175 minutes, the left-hander then being finely caught for a skilful and flawless innings which lasted nearly three hours and contained six 4’s. Tarrant, who obtained the first century of the season, was out to a magnificent catch at short-leg by Drake. His chanceless and fine defensive inDings of 127 was made out of 254 in 220 minutes and contained a 6 —a hit over the ring—and sixteen 4’s. Wickets afterwards fell more rapidly and, although Goldie and Robinson added 60, the innings closed for 345. Going in again, 80 behind, the County lost Wilson at 11, but Denton, after almost playing-on ere making a run, then played a delightful innings, scoring 84 by strokes all round the wicket—he hit two 5’s and seven 4’s— and putting on 96 for the second wicket with Rhodes. At the end of the day four wickets were down for 175, and on Wednesday, thanks to a seventh-wicket stand of 74 by Haigh and Booth, the total reached 338. With 259 required to win, the M.C.C. had three and a-half hours in which to bat. Warner and Mead were soon out, to Hirst, and it was whilst the latter batsman was in that Tarrant hit a no-ball from the bowler named over the grand-stand into a garden— a fine stroke. Goldie made 21, but neither Macleod nor Foster gave much trouble, half the side being out for 78. With Relf and Tarrant together 72 were added before another wicket fell, the latter, who seemed set for his second hundred in the match, then falling to Haigh. Relf did his best to pull off the game, but the County got home by 45 runs. Score and analysis:— First innings. Rhodes, b Relf (A. E.) ........... Wilson, b Douglas .................. OXFORD UN IVER S ITY TR IAL MATCH. Played at Oxford on May 8 , 9 and 10. Mr. A. J. Evans’ side won by nine wickets. Monday’s cricket was noteworthy for an attractive innings by Campbell, who scored 92 in 100 minutes, hit four 6 ’s and ten 4’s and put on 78 for the ninth wicket wiih Burton. In response to a total of 246, Mr. Evans’ side made 116 for the loss of Le Couteur. On Tuesday Sale, hitting sixteen 4’s, made 130 in two hours and a-half by almost faultless cricket, and with Evans added 130 in 70 minutes. The innings was declared with seven wickets down, and by the end of the day Mr. Altham's side had made 125 for six wickets (the Gaekwar, not out 45.) The third day’s play was disappointing, the remaining players doing little and the match being over early. Score and analysis: — M r . H. S. A lth am ’ s S ide . First innings. Second innings. G. V.
