138 CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. May 1 3 , 1 9 1 1 . THE OXFORD FRESHMEN’S MATCH. Played at Oxford on May 4, 5 and 6 . On the first day, when conditions favoured the bowlers, eighteen wickets fell for 227 runs. Neither Campbell nor Knott, of whom much had been expected, was seen to advantage, the honours being carried off by Hinde, who scored 42 by free and sound cricket and carried out his bat. Rockliffe and Mercier, of Australia and the West Indies respectively, met with most success with the ball. Both are fast right-hand. On the second day, thanks to a last-wicket stand of 49, A. J. Evans’ side secured a lead of 60 on the first innings. Although punished rather freely during the partnership, Mercier came out with a good analysis. Against Rockliffe and Burton five wickets fell for 25 runs when Twining’s side went in again, but a stand of 8 G by Mercier and the Gaekwar of Baroda improved matters considerably. The latter played a stylish inninps of 51, making some fine strokes to the off. At the end of the day ten wickets were down for 181, and on Saturday Mr. Evans’ side were left with 150 to win, Mercier and Twining not being parted until they had put on 68 for the last wicket. The final stage of the game was marked by some excellent cricket on the part of Knott, who scored 72 out of 115 in an hour, hitting a dozen 4’s. Mercier again bowled well, but the best bowling in the match was done by Burton of Malvern. Score and analysis :— M r . R. H. First innings. T wining ’ s S ide . Second innings. W. L. Mr. Ireland’s XII. won by nine wickets. Everything on the opening day of the match was put into the shade by the bowling of Grierson, of Bedford Grammar School, who bowls left-hand medium-pace, and in 93 balls took eight wickets for 33 runs. G. C. Dowling, an old Carthusian, almost equalled his opponents’ total off his own bat. He had some good fortune, but played bright cricket and during the 75 minutes he was in hit a 5 and six 4 s. Tudor, on the other hand, Was very deliberate in his methods, taking 130 minutes to score 49. On the second afternoon Mr. Ireland’s side, as was generally expected, won very comfortably, the marg:n in their favour being nine wickets. Richardson and Fleming added 66 together and Hopley and Rawson 111. Each of the latter hit eisht 4’s, and the former batted for au hour and 40 minutes and the latter for two hours. Ireland’s side obtained the 156 required to win very easily, thanks to a first-wicket partner ship cf 132 by Tudor and Gosling. Score and analysis :— M r . M. F alcon ’ s XII. First innings. THE SURREY COUNTY C.C. At last week’s Annual General Meeting of the above Club, the President, Lord Alverstone, made a presentation to Mr. Leveson-Gower, the retiring captain, on behalf of the members of the S.C.C.C. (see Gossip). He announced that the new committeemen were Messrs. S. Christopherson —the famous old fast bowler, of Kent, who has resided in Surrey for some time past—A. M. Latham, M. C. Bird and M. Marshall, and that Mr. R. C. Grellet had been appointed instructor to the young players. He also stated that, as the result of a letter received by him from Mr. J. N. Craw ford, the Committee had rescinded the resolution passed concerning him. With regard to the changes in the laws of the game, he was glad the batsman’s privilege of hitting at a no-ball had not been interfered with.
