Cricket 1911
M ay 13, 1911. CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 137 M.C.C. AND GROUND v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE . (Continued from page 127.) Played at Lord’s on May 3 and 4. Nottinghamshire won by 66 runs. So much progress had been made with this match on the Wednesday that everything pointed to a definite result being reached ou the second day. The wicket recovered surprisingly well after the rain which had caused an early adjournment on the opening day, and runs were at no time so difficult to obtain. By lunch time the County had taken their score to 138 for four wickets, the Gunns and Payton all doing well. John Gunn took pains to play himself in and then made some good hits, once scoring 18 off an over from E e lf: with Payton he added 79 in 50 minutes. Later in the innings the run-getting was not so brisk, but Iremonger played sound cricket for 43 and the total reached 226. Eelf was clearly the best bowler, and his success was deserved. The M.C.C. were left with 223 to win, and entered upon their task just before half-past four. In two hours and a-quarter they were dismissed for 156, but befoie their last wicket fell some fine hitting was seen. In 27 minutes Johnston and Tarrant put up 57 for the first wicket, the former’s free and attractive methods being very popular. Iremonger and Wass afterwards bowled with such success that no other batsman exceeded a dozen. Iremonger performed exceedingly well, rarely delivering a loose ball. In order that the match might be finished on the second day, play was continued until 20 minutes to seven. Score and analysis :— First innings. Second innings. Surrey won by an innings and 46 runs. The sides in this game were very unevenly matched, Surrey, clearly the stronger team, holding the upper hand throughout and winning with the greatest ease. F. E. Foster, who is said to have given up first-class cricket, and Lilley, owing to a touch of sciatica, did not assist Warwickshire, who were led by Lieut. Cowan. Eushby, whose first match it was for the county since his return from league cricket, was not slow to prove his worth to the side, he and Smith bowling unchanged for 100 minutes and dismissing Warwickshire for 62. Each bowler obtained two wickets with consecutive balls during the innings, and Eushby, in addition, broke a couple of stumps, when bowling Quaife and Kinneir. The last-named showed very stubborn defence, and Santall hit finely for a little time and the last wicket put on 20. By consistent batting on the part of the first seven members of the side, Surrey scored 195. The brightest cricket was shown by Ducat, who put on 64 in 55 minutes for the third wicket with Hayes, whose cricket was much more subdued than usual. Going in again, with arrears amounting to 133, Warwickshire lost their first four wickets for six runs, but by the end of the day had taken the total to 27 without further loss. Charlesworth and Quaife were bowled by Eushby with successive balls, and from the next Cowan was run-out. On the Friday, Parsons, a colt, batted with great patience for 22 not out and with Hands (who at one period was in for an hour for 4 runs) added 33 in 65 minutes.
