M ay 6,1911. CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 119 TRANSVAAL v. WESTERN PROVINCE. Played at Lord’s No. 1 Ground on March 27 and 28. The Transvaal won by ten wickets. Except for a partnership of 65 by Yeoman and Melle after iwo wickets had fallen for 5 runs, the first innings of Western Province was not noteworthy. The feature of the match was the batting of Tancred, who made 137 for the first wicket with Lindsay and added 108 for the fourth with Floquet. He hit magnificently all round the wicket, made a 6 and nineteen 4's and was missed when 77. He was fourth out, at 306. Floquet hit hard for his 87, and two 6 ’s and eight 4’s were included among his strokes. Melle subsequently played a fine innings, but the Transvaal won by ten wickets. Taylor, in scoring 235 in the match for Natal, did better than ever before, and in putting on 283 for the second wicket with Blake helped to set up a fresh record for first-class cricket in South Africa. He was missed three times—at 8 , 28 and 138—whilst Blake, when 127, was let off twice off consecutive balls. Griqualand West were left with 444 to win, and in scoring 275 did better than was generally expected, and were beaten only three minutes before time. Shurrie and N. V. Tapscott put up 87 for the first wicket and Maritz and L. Tapscott added 98 for the third. The last-named made his 106 out of 155 in an hour and three-quarters by free cricket, hitting a six and seven fours. His only mistake was a mis-hit between the wickets when 98.
