118 CR ICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 6, 1911. The Currie Cup Tournament . (Continued from Page 111.) and NATAL v. TRANSVAAL. Played at Lord’s No. 1 Ground on March 24 and 25. Natal won by six wickets. The greatest interest centred in this match for the sides en were, beyond doubt, the strongest engaged in the Tournament, upon its result depended the winner in the competition. By fairly consistent batting—seven players reached double-figures—The Transvaal scored 233, and, despite a fifth wicket stand of 105 by Pearse and Samuelson, gained a lead of 43 on the innings. When play ceased on the first day Natal had six men out for 156, and, considering the strength of the teams engaged, a definite result was hardly expected. But on the second morning Cox bowled as he had never bowled before, so that in the short space of 70 minutes the powerful Transvaal team wTere put out for 58. Natal, set 103 to win, made the runs for the loss of four wickets amid very great enthusiasm. Score and analysis : — Griqualand West had a hopeless Budgen, who took eleven wickets and analysis:— G r iq u a l , First innings. L. J. Shurrie, b Snooke .................. N. V. GRIQUALAND WEST v. WESTERN PROVINCE. Played at Lord’s No. 4 Ground on March 24 and 25. The Western Province won by an innings and 116 runs. In this game Griqualand West were outplayed from start to finish and beaten with the greatest ease. After collapsing for 69, they saw their opponents run up over 300. It was somewhat re markable that three of the Western Province batsmen should make as many as ‘256 of the 295 runs obtained from the bat. Yeoman and Wrentmore put on 48 for the second wicket and the former and Melle 77 for the third, whilst the last-named and Conry subsequently added 93 for the fourth. By aggressive cricket Melle scored 145— his highest innings in a first-class match—hitting five 6 ’s and six 4’s. S. D. Snooke, c Maritz, b Druce ... 0 G. M. Wrentmore, c E. Played at Lord’s No. 3 Ground on March 24 and 25. Orange River Colony won by an innings and 7 runs. When this match had been in progress a little time Sennett, the O.R.C. wicket-keeper, met with an injury to his thumb and was obliged to retire. His place was taken by A. N. Jewell. The only noteworthy feature of the game was the collapse of Eastern Province in their second innings against Fawcus and Stanton, the side being put out for 40 in just over an hour.
