TOOWOOMBA. Played at Toowoomba on Nov. 30, Dec. 1. The South Africans won by an innings and 11 runs. The interest taken in this match was purely local, and the Toowoombians were certainly venturesome in taking the field with only eleven men. rlb e game was limited to a couple of days, in which time the tourists had no oifficulty in winning by an innings. On the first day the attendance was 4,000 and receipts amounted to about £120. After dismissing the home side for 83, the South Africans ran up 320 in 189 minutes, Snooke and Nourse playing very freely. The former made his 93 in 100 minutes and hit two 6's. Toowoomba gave a better display in their second innings, but the game was not taken too seriously. Jones, who was again top scorer, scored 82 in 85 minutes, hitting a 6 and two 4's, and with Barbour put on 101 for the sixth wicket. The innings lasted two hours 22 minutes. Jones is a solicitor by profession and once won the high jump championship of Australia. Score and analysis:— T oowoomba . First innings. Second innings. E. A. Played at Brisbane on Deciinber 2, 3 and 5. Drawn. In view of the first Test match Schwarz was given a rest; otherwise the visitors were at full strength. Evans, the captain of the Australian side, put the South Africans in first on a drying wicket and saw three of their best men sent back for 10 runs. There, however, the pronounced success of the bowlers ceased, for Faulkner added 65 with Nourse and 51 with Llewellyn, whilst later Sinclair and Sherwell put on 68 for the eighth wicket and the latter and Vogler 84 for the ninth. Slierwell’s cutting was much admired. By aggressive and entertaining cricket Hordern made 54, but the feature of the home side’s first innings was the batting of Jennings, who made 95 out of 171 in 123 minutes. The latter hit nine 4’s and a 5, made some excellent strokes to the on and was out to a brilliant catch by Llewellyn at cover. With Kortlang he added 75 and with Macartney 58. By consistent play the South Africans made 197 for eight wickets in their second innings and then declare!, leaving the Australians two hours and a-half in which to make 276 to win. Some skilful batting by Marshal resulted, that plaver, who hit thirteen 4’s, making 106 out of 203 in two hours without a mistake. His driving and cutting evoked much enthusiasm, and he made his second 50 in 30 minutes. With Fennelly he put on 60 for the fourth wicket and with Kortlang 79 for the fifth.
