A p r i l 2 9 ,19 11. CRICKET : A W EEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. 109 GRIQUALAND WEST v. TRANSVAAL. Played at Lord’s No. 4 Ground on March 20 and 21. The Transvaal won by an innings and 93 runs. As the result of very uneven cricket on the first day, Transvaal got rid of their opponents for 165 and then ran up 327 for the loss of only two wickets. At one point Griqualand West’s total appeared likely to be even smaller, for their seventh wicket went down at 66. N. V. Tapscott, who hit two 6's and four 4’s in his brilliant 54, and Ling added 89 together, and the total was as stated. The Transvaal, thanks to a fine first-wicket stand, gained a lead with only one man out. Tancred and Lindsay made 145 for the first wicket and the latter and Floquet 60 for the second. Tancred, missed when 13, hit a 6 and six 4’s, and Lindsay, who should have been stumped when 84, a 6 and ten 4s. Subsequently Heather hit freely—he obtained 18 off Hughes in one over—and, with Floquet also making runs readily, the cricket was very bright. The pair named put on 159 for the third wicket, and when Moulder and Heather had added 54 for the fourth the innings was closed. Floquet hit a 6 and thirteen 4’s, and Walter Dickins kept wicket splendidly, allowing only three byes in the large total. The second innings of the Griqualand West was marked by a patient display by Maritz, who made 51 of the last 134 runs and carried out his bat. The only player to give him much support was E. Tapseott, who stayed whilst 58 were added for the seventh wieket. Score and analysis :— G r iqu alan d First innings. J. M. Powell (capt.), b Carter......................... L. J. On the first day each side completed an innings, with an advantage of 56 to Natal. Hartigan played a fine game for Border, and in making 53 out of 92 in 115 minutes hit a 6 and two 4’s : he added 27 with Cross and 41 with Preston. Thomson, who captained Natal, also did well, making 67 and putting on 52 with Dalton and 44 with Anderson : he hit two 6’s and four 4’s. Cox subsequently made some big hits—two for 6 each in succession off Hartigan —and the total reached 172. There was rain during the night, and with run-getting being no easy matter the result was never in doubt. Score and analysis :— B o r d e r . First innings. Second innings. H.
