Played at Lord’s No. 1 Ground on March 17 and 18. Natal won by four wickets. After being 10 behind on the first innings, Natal beat the holders by four wickets. They were set 143 to win and lost their sixth wicket at 112. Amid considerable excitement Thomson and Samuelson obtained the balance, but the latter, in addition to being missed quite early, was beaten and bowled by a no-fcall from Short. Western Province opened very well, Melle and Snooke making 65 for the first wicket the latter and Jackson adding 60 for the third. The first and second wickets fell at 65 and the next four at 125. The Natal batting was uneven, but Taylor and Pearse put on 44 together and Dalton and Tuckett 37. Cox bowled capitally when Western Province went in the second time, and it was his attack which rendered Natal’s success possible. Score and analysis : W estern P r o vin ce . First innings. S. P. Played at Lord’s No. 3 Ground on March 17 and 18. Eastern Province won by 58 runs. A somewhat remarkable feature of this game was that in each of the four innings a respectable total should be reached after a very poor opening. Eastern Province, after losing seven wickets for 66 and four for 26, scored 159 and 163 in their respective innings, whilst Griqualand W est com piled 128 and 136 after having four men out for 13 in their first innings and five for 33 in their second. The best innings for either side was Le R ou x’s 71 out of 133 in 110 minutes : he hit a 6 and a 4 and two 3’s. Giri m ade his 53 without a mistake, and Tapscott, hitting freely, obtained 60 of the last 99 scored in the m atch and carried out his bat. In their second innings Griqualand West had nine wickets down for 70, and the last pair—Tapscott and W illiam D ickins—added 66. They would probably have put on m ore but for the tea interval, which obviously unsettled them . Score and analysis:— E astern P rovince . First innings. Second innings. F.
