VICTORIA. Played at Melbourne on November 11, 12, 14, 15, 16. Victoria won by five wickets. With Ransford away owing to indisposition and Saunders no longer available, Victoria were not so strong as usual, and therefore their success was the more meritorious. Rain on the first day delayed the game to such an extent that only a s:ngle, an extra, was scored by the South Africans, who h d been put in after losing the toss. In that time, however, Strieker’s ti umb was dam aged by a fast ball from Facy. On the second day Nourse and Faulkner added 106 togtther for the fouith wicket and were the chief contributors to the total of 189. For Victoria Warne scored 84 of the first 143 runs without a mistake, hitting six 4’s, and with Kortlang put on 68 for the fourth wicket. The latter shaptd excellently for his runs, his play being sound, watchful and confident, and Matthews, in scoring 51 in 56 minutes, made some fine strokes on both sides of the wicket. Iu their second innings the visitors had three men out for 56 at the close of Monday’s play, and, thanks chiefly to a fourth wicket btand of 84 by Faulkner and Nourse, the total reached 236, leaving Victoria 125 to win, a number they obtained for tbe loss of half their wickets. More than a word of praise is due to Strieker, who, despite his injury an 1 the fact that he offered two chances, batted with rare pluck. The match receipts amounted to £662. Played at Sydney on November 18, 19 & 21. New South Wales won by three wickets. The home side had every reason to be satisfied with their victory, seeing that they were not at full strength, that Folkard who was given a trial played excellent cricket, and that their two greatest batsmen, Trumper and Bardsley, proved themselves in first-rate form. The feat of the p a r mentioned in making over 100 for the first wicket in each innings contributed largely to their side’s success: they scored 122 together in 69 minutes in the first innings and 121 in an hour in the second. In the first innings of the tourists Strieker and Nourse made 82 together and Faulkner and Pearse, who hit a 6 and seven 4*s, 71. In the second half of the game the last-named was again seen to advantage, playing soundly and well for 52 and carrying out his bat. Notwithstanding his fine display, however, and an opening partnership of 53 by Zulch and Strieker, New South Wales were set only 212 to win, and that number, as stated, they obtained for the loss of seven wickets. The receipts of the match amounted to £1,739 13s. 7d., of which the South Score and A frica n s’ share w as £ 63 1 17s a n a ly s is :— S outh A frica . First innings. Second innings, J. W.
