PORT ANTONIO. Played at Port Antonio on March 31 and April 1. The M .C.C.’s Team won by 144 runs. As the result of some useful batting by the later members of the side, the visitors ran up 206 in their first innings—a score, which, bearing in mind the calibre of the opposition, was a guarantee against defeat. Their first four wickets were lost for 31, but a stand of 46 by Holloway and Brown improved matters considerably. Subsequently A. F. Somerset and Gaussen added 29 and A. C. Somerset and Young 54 for the last. For Port Antonio Holt and Kennedy put on 58 after two wickets had fallen for 6, but the rest of the side could make little headway against Young and Hearne and the total was only 124 when the last wicket fell. Going in again, the M.C.C.’s side ran up 154 for five and declared— Smith and A. C. Somerset added 53 for the third partnership—leaving Port Antonio 237 to win. It never seemed as though the number would be obtained, for Hearne had all the players in difficulties and came through with eight wickets for four runs each. The visitors had first use of a good wicket and compiled 269, six members of the side reaching double-figures. Holloway and D. C. F. Burton put on 72 for the second wicket and the former and Smith 68 for the third. Smith played excellent cricket for his 81— a faultless innings. Scott, who had bowled well in the Port Antonio match, again came through with fine figures. Smith followed up his good innings by taking five wickets for 35 in a total of 173, and when the M.C.C.’s side went in again made his aggregate for the match 103. Jamaica were set 228 to win. A couple of good wickets were down for 36, but G. C. Foster and Nicholson put on 57 for the third wicket and the latter and Holt 51 for the fourth. Then for a time the attack obtained the upper hand so that seven men were out for 170. A capital stand of 44 by Morriaon and Duncker followed, but 14 runs were still required when Scott went in, last man. With two runs wanted Smith was no-balled, but with his following delivery that bowler got Scott caught at slip. Smith took his last three wickets for 10 runs in four overs.
