Oxford University, at Brighton, June 24, 25, 26.—In the first innings of the University P. Le Couteur was run out owing to his partner, F. H. Turner, hitting b ick a ball which passed through the hands of the bowler, Vincett (J. H.), and disturbed a bail whilst liewas backing-up. E. C. Hatfeild(35) made all the 30 runs added for the last wicket whilst in with J. C. M. Lowe ( 0 *). For Sussex Vincett made 70 in 35 minutes, reaching 50 in 20: he and C. L. A. Smith (28) put on 71 together for the ninth wicket in 25 minutes, the pair scoring 45 in three overs off Lowe and 26 in two off F. H. Turner, who relieved him. Hampshire v. Middlesex, at Portsmouth, June 24, 25, 26.—In his second innings Tarrant, F. A. (44) took 40 minutes to make 18 and then doubled his score by hitting two 6 ’s, a 4 and a 2 off Newman (J.) in one over. Surrey v. Gloucestershire, at the Oval, June 24, 25, 26.—J. N. Crawford made 32 out of 38 in 10 minutes. M.C.C. and Ground v. Cambridge Univer sity, at Lord’s, and Essex v. Leicestershire, at Leyton, June 24, 25, 26.—Owing to rain, these matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled. Warwickwiekshire v. Northamptonshire, at Edgbaston, June 26, 28, 29.—This match was commenced on a Saturday. Scotland v. Australians, at Edinburgh, June 28, 29.—In the second innings of Scotland B. G. Tait scored 52 of the 66 runs made for the first wicket with J. Anderson in 65 minutes. M.C.C. and Ground v. Oxford University, at Lord’s, June 28, 29, 30.—Braund, L. C. ( 33 ), batted half-an-hour at one period of his innings without making a run. Gloucestershire v. Kent, at Bristol, June 28, 29, 30.—At one period of the former’s first innings Blythe (C.) took six wickets for 6 runs. Essex v. Middlesex, at Leyton, June 28, 29, 30.—This match was abandoned without a ball being bowled, owing to rain. England v. Australia, at Leeds, July 1, 2, 3. —G. L. Jessop, whilst fielding in Australia’s first innings, strained a muscle at the base of the spine so severely that he was obliged to be taken to his hotel on an ambulance. He did not play again during the season. In England’s first innings Tyldesley (J. T.) made 26 siugles in an innings of 55. [On Novem ber 23 Bichard Whitehead, of Harrogate, the masseur who attended Jessop after his accident, sued the Yorkshire Liberal News paper and Publishing Company, Ltd., for libel in the form of a cartoon in the Yorkshire Evening News of July 12 and was awarded £ 20 . Warwickshire v. Hampshire, at Leaming ton, July 1, 2, 3.—In the former's second innings F. B. Foster (51 not out) and Smith (E. J.) added 61 for the last wicket, of which number the latter scored only 6 . Worcestershire v. Kent, at Stourbridge, July 5, 6 , 7.—Woolley, F. E. (185) and Fielder, A. (112 not out) put on 235 together for Kent’s last wicket in 140 minutes. Gentlemen v. Players, at the Oval, July 8 , 9, 10.—In the Players’ first innings, Woolley (F. E.) made 55 out of 69 in an hour. This was D. W. Carr’s second appear ance in first-class cricket; he took eight wickets for 138 runs (three for 58 and five for 80). Gloucestershire v. Australians, at Bristol, July 12, 13, 14.—Of the 120 runs added for the Australians’ fourth wicket by W. Bards ley (211) and S. E. Gregory, the latter made only 31. Surrey v. Australians, at the Oval, July 15,16,17.—Owing to a disagreement between the Surrey County C.C. and J. N. Crawford, the services of that fine player were lost to the county. At the end of October Crawford left England to become a Master at St. Peter’s College, Adelaide. Middlesex v. Lancashire, at Lord’s, July 15, 16 and 17.—In the first innings of the former Sharp (J.) at one period took six wickets for 5 runs in 26 balls. He svas not put on in the second innings, which amounted to 137. Somerset v. Worcestershire, at Tauntom July 15, 16 and 17.—In the first innings of Somerset P. B. Johnson was bowled by Burrows (B.) with a ball which broke the centre stump. In Worcestershire’s second innings Bowley (F.) scored 65 out of 93 in 80 minutes, reaching 50 out of 72 in 55 minutes, and Braund (L. C.) made five catches - four of them at slip. On the last morning of the match H. Martyn umpired in place of Moss (J.), who retired from the game owing to indisposition. Notts v. Yorkshire, at Nottingham, July 15, 16 and 17.—Yorkshire declared both their innings closed—at 331 for nine wickets and 111 for four. The match was drawn. Kent v. Sussex, at Tunbridge Wells, July 15, 16 and 17.—In the first innings of Sussex F. Cartwright batted 100 minutes for 18 runs, not scoring during the last 25 minutes he was in. Hampshire v. Derbyshire, at Southampton, July 15, 16, 17.—In the first innings of Hampshire Brown (G.) made 75 out of 84 in 55 minutes. In the second innings of the same side Cadman (S.), in trying to make a catch in the long-field, misjudged the ball and had his nose broken. Warwickshire v. Leicestershire, at Edg baston, July 17, 19, 20.—This match was commenced on a Saturday. In scoring 137 not out in the first innings of the visitors Knight (A. E.) made 62 singles ; at one time he obtained only 1 run in three-quarters of an hour. In the second innings of Warwick shire F. R. Foster scored 97 out of 136 in 80 minutes, reaching 51 out of 75 in 45 minutes. Essex v. Gloucestershire, at Leyton, July 19, 20, 21.—Set 371 to win in five hours, Gloucestershire scored 346 for seven wickets in that time, Board (J. H.) obtaining 150 not out. Northamptonshire v. Notts, at Northamp ton, July 19, 20, 21.—In the first innings of Northants, C. J. T. Pool (94) made 50 out of 66 in 50 minutes. Kent v. Surrey, at Blackheath, July 22, 23, 24.—In Surrey's first innings Spring (A. W.) made 97 out of 118 in 80 minutes ; he obtained 51 out of 66 in 50 minutes. Notts, v. Gloucestershire, at Nottingham, July 22,23, 24.—In the first innings of Notts., Alletson (E.) scored 70 out of 102 in an hour. In Gloucestershire’s first innings Board, J. H. (74), when 49, played a ball from Wass (T.) on to his wicket without removing a bail. Middlesex v. Somerset, at Lords, July 22, 23, 24.—In the first innings of Middlesex E. S.
