Hathorn and Campbell made their first ap pearance for the visitors, who were captained by Schwarz. Llewellyn, for the first lime (luring the tour, scored well, making 119 runs in the match for once out. Claude Jennings and Marshal were seen to advantage in each innings, but Faulkner’s all-round cricket was the feature of the match. When the South Africans had four good wickets down for 48 in the second innings, the game was in a fairly level state, but Faulkner and Zulch subsequently added 106 for the fifth wicket, and Llewellyn and Schwarz 138 in an hour for the ninth. Zulch obtained his 99 out of 149 in 115 minutes, and Llewellyn, who carried out his bat, 88 out of 142 in 67 : the former hit fifteen 4’s and the latter eleven. Queensland, set 440 to win, did well to make as many as 31 7. They were given a splendid start by Jennings and Hartigan, who scored 137 together for the first wicket, and five of the late players got double figures. Faulkner, in addition to scoring 54 and 78, took ten wickets for 138 runs. Score :— S outh A fr ic a . First innings. Second innings. J. W. ( the fibst test .) P lay ed at Sydney on D ecem ber 9, 10, 12, 13 an d 14. A u stralia w on by an in n in gs and 114 runs. T h e A u stralians h a d all the lu ck o f the m atch an d w on w ith th e greatest of ease. O n th e first day, w h en the con d ition s o f weather and wicket were perfect, they scored 494 for six wickets and on the following morning took the total to 528. The large score was obtained in 5 hours, 22 minutes, and the total reached 100 in 56 minutes, 200 in 108, 300 in two hours and three quaiters, 400 in 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 500 in 4 hours 55 minutes. A brilliant throw-in by Llewellyn from cover-point ran out Trumper when 52 had been scored in half-an-hour, but Bardsley and Hill added 224 runs for the second wicket in two hours and the latter and Gehrs 144 for the third in 64 minutes. Bardsley was missed when 111 and Hill when 113; the former hit sixteen 4's and the latter eighteen. The South Africans fared badly against Cotter in. a failing light, losing Stricker at 5, Zulch at 10, Pearse at 29, Nourse and Llewellyn at 38, Snooke at 44, and Sinclair at 49. Schwarz and Faulkner then came together and in an hour and a-quarter added 91 without being parted. Play should have continued at noon on the Monday, but rain had then been falling for 36 hours and it was not until just before five o’clock on the Tuesday that the game could be resumed. Even then only 13 minutes’ play was possible before bad light caused stumps to De drawn. During that time six runs were added, all made by Schwarz, who, like Faulkner, batted on three days for his first innings score. The stand for the eighth wicket realised 100 runs in 87 minutes. Schwarz hit six 4’s and Faulkner, who batted 30 minutes without making a run, ten. In the follow-on Sher well went in first and played a sound, attractive and valuable innings of 60 without a mistake. Faulkner and Nourse subsequently did well, but the latter was missed when 2 1 . Vogler, who injured his thumb on the first day, obtained a pair of spectacles. Score and analysis :— A u stralia . V. T. Trumper, run out ..............................27 W. Bardsley, b Pearse 132 C.
