Makinson, T. J. Matthews, P. S. McDonnell, C. M cKenzie, R. Mitchell, W . Murray, J. O’Halloran, R. M. Osborne, W . Over, W . Slight, W . Tobin, and V. B. Trapp. W ith regard to the table which follows, one would like to point out that it is not intended as a record of great preformances with the ball, or, at least, not of these alone, though, of course, they fall into it, but of good perfor mances. E very case in which a bowler took five or more wickets in an innings, or eight or more in a match, is set down. Under five wickets only the instances in which the wickets were taken at unusually small cost are given. Arm strong’s 4 for 41 and 4 for 44 may not look much on paper ; but, in fact, they represent better work than, say, “ Gid ” Elliott’s 4 for 19 fifty years and more ago. In some few cases the inclusion of both innings, where eight or more wickets were taken, does a bowler some slight injustice. For instance, H owell’s 9 for 52 at Melbourne (second innings) becom es obscured b y being recorded as i0 for 79 (both innings). But this is the only instance in the series of nine wickets in an innings. Eight in an innings have been taken by F. E. Allan (twice, S., 1868-9, and M., 1871-2), S. Cosstick (S., 1870-71), and H. Trumble (M., 1898-9) for Victoria ; and b y S. Cosstick (M., 1865-6), T. R. M cKibbin (twice, M., 1895-6, and S., 1896-7), A. L. Newell (S., 1897-8), and C. T. B . Turner (S., 1890-91) for New South Wales. Seven in an innings have been taken by W . H . Cooper (S., 1879-80). G. E lliott (M., 1855-6), C. E. M cLeod (M.. 1903-4), W . E. Midwinter (M., 1883-4). J. Phillips (M.. 1890-1), J. V. Sannders (S., 1905-6), and H. Trumble (twice, M., 1887-8. and M., 1900-1) for V ictoria ; b y J. Coates (S., 1874-5), S. H . Emery (M., 1909-10), E. Evans (M., 1875-6), C. Lawrence (in each innings, S., 1862-3), M. A. N oble (M., 1901-2), and J. Scott (S., 1909-10), for New South Wales. In all, seven or more wickets in an inniners have thus been taken 14 times b y New South Wales bowlers, and 12 times b y Victorians. If Sam Cosstick’s feat of 1865-6 had been performed for the side with which he was always associated, except in this one match, the numbers would be equal. GOOD BOW LING PERFO RM AN CES.
