O c t . 2 7 , 1 9 1 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 443 CHOICE OF INNINGS. To the Editor of C ricket . S ir ,— “ Tbe choice of innings shall be decided by tossing.” Though our present Law I. was incorporated only in 1884, tossing for innings is probably as old as the use of Gunter’s Chain (see Cricket for 28th July last) “ Whatever is is right,” I firmly believe - in Nature; but this does not apply to man-made laws, as, I think this system of tossing clearly proves, if proof be needed. Why, then, should Law I., as regards this clause, not be amended at the next Revision by the M.C.C.? The spirit of reform—I write as concerning the first-class section of the game, which seems, alas ! to be growing ever more distinct from the others—is abroad ; abundant energy is aboat to be expended on the effort to abolish the “ Lancashire scheme ” of scoring in the Championship; what more fitting occasion, then, for raising this question, too ? It is a platitude that cricket does not lend itself to any system of “ point ” scoring. But if we will have our Championship table, in which we continue annually to point out the injustice to some or all of the competitors entailed by the scoring method in force, it seems to me that more injustice is caused by tbi* s\stem of tossing for iunings than by any easily conceivable method of arithmetical award of favours and penalties—especially in an unsettled seasonI ike the present, or last, where the conditions are practically never the same for both sides, and winning the toss is usually synonymous with winning the match. Why should any county habitually gain an unearned increment merely by reason of possessing a lucky halfpenny ? If this principle be admitted, why have any cricket in the competition at all ? The final result would be much more easily, and quite as equitably, decided by the same number cf spins of the coin by the various captains ; and what a saving of expense to the County Clubs! Either let the visiting side have the choice of innings in all matches, or the losers of the toss in the first have their choice in the return. I am, &c., “ ZUMMERZET.” C eylon , 31 st August , J910. [In the Laws of 1744, the olJest extant, it was enacted that “ the party that wins the toss-up may order which side shall go in first, at his option.” Later this was altered, and for many years—until about 1816—the rule was “ The Tarty which goes from home shall have th e ch o ice of in n in gs ................” — E d . Cricket .] A SUGGESTION. To the Editor of C ricket . D ear S ir , —Through the medium of your valuable paper kindly allow me to suggest to the County Cricket Club secretaries that, when arranging fixtures for next season, as they will do at Lord’s in December, they might with advantage to the game not necessarily conclude their lists so early in September, which is usually a dry month, and much more suited to cricket than to football. Concerning the last-mentioned pastime, I sometimes think that its portion of the year —eight months out of twelve—is rather too much and am inclined to wish that foot ballers would leave September for the cricketers, though, in all fairness to them, they seem to be, as a body, more enthusiastic than adherents of the summer game. Yours faithfully, G. A. BROOKING. October 22iul, 1910. [Before the Secretaries could extend the fixture-lists to the end of September it would be necessary for the County Committees to sanction the proceeding. — E d . Cricket .] CRICKET IN INDIA.
