4 2 2 CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . 22, 1910. CORRESPONDENCE. [The Editor does not hold himself responsible for the opinions of his correspondents .] THE REVISION OP THE LAWS. To the Editor of C ricket . Sir,—The point to which you have referred in Paiilion Goisip is explained as follows. The Laws of Cricket were revised and re written in 1882 by the Committee a] pointed for the purpose, and the draft was widely circulated, not only in this country, but also in Australia and America. By the rules of M.C.C , alterations in the Laws can only be made at the Annual Meeting of M.C.C. in May of each year, due notice having been given. The revised version could not there fore have been adopted before May, 1883, but as the revision had been very extensive it was suggested by Lord Bessborough that a further delay of a year should take place in order to give ample time for further criticism from outside. The Laws of Cricket were therefore revised and rewritten in 1882, but were not finally adopted as a code until May, 1884, although they had been approved of by the General Committee of M.C.C. a long time before. A good many additions have been made since, but there has been no alteration in principle. W. E. DENISON. September 18th. CHAELES DICKENS AND CRICKET. To tl e Editor of C ricket . S ib ,— I have often wished that some one would give in your columns a list of the references to cricket to be found in Dickens’ works. Now that the season is over some of your readers may feel inclined to place their knowledge at your disposal. So far as I am aware—I do not profess to be a student of Dickens—his only allusion to the game is in Chapter vii. of The Pickwick Papers , where the match between All Muggleton and Ding- ley Dell is described. Yours, &c., C. F. ADAMSON. September 19th. [In Chapter xxiv. of the sime work cricket is mentioned again in a conversation between George Nupkins, Esq., Mayor of Ipswich, and Grummer “ Grummer,” said the magistrate. “ Your wash-up.” “ 1s the town quiet now ? ’’ “ Pretty well, your wash-up,” replied Grummer. “ Pop’Iar feeling has in a measure subsided, consekens o’ the boys having dispersedto cricket.”—Ed , Cricket.] KENT AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP. To the Editor of C ricket . S ir , —I have not yet heard whether it has been decided to celebrate Kent’s success in securing the Championship by entertaining the team at dinner. Should such a course be decided on, may I suggest that arrange ments be made for such a function to take place in London as well as in Kent, as was done in 1906? The success of the dinner at the Cecil four years ago was most marked. There must have been many who were prevented from being present at last year’s dinner at Canterbury by the knowledge that attendance would have involved a week-end away from home, or, at least, returning on the Sunday. Yours faithfully, L ondon . “ OXONIAN.” 18th September, 1910. MINOR COUNTY AVERAGES. (Continued from page 1*07.) NORTHUMBERLAND. BATTING AVERAGES. Times Most out in an Total Inns. out. inns. Runs.
