Of the eighteen matches played they lost fifteen and drew three, not a single success awarding their efforts. The only games which can have afforded them any satisfaction were the unfinished encounter with Gloucestershire and the home engage ment with Kent, which the Champions won by 47 runs, thanks to the bowling of D. W. Carr, after being iu serious danger of defeat. The side suffered much from inability to place representative teams in the field. J. Daniell, the captain, was unable to play until late in the year, and during his absence S. M. J. Woods appeared occasionally in the early part of the season and P. R. Johnson undertook the leadership later. The consti tution of the team varied considerably, and there was a further handicap in Braund receiv ing injuries to both his hands early in the season. Johnson, who only just failed to make two separate hundreds against Sussex, heads the averages with 31*44, and Samson was a decidedly useful member of the side in August whilst Lewis also batted with some success. Braund’s figures, however, fell from 30 85 to 15-00, and altogether the batting of the side must be accounted poor. In bowling, Lewis took seventy-one wickets for 23 57 runs each, but Robson and Braund were expensive. W. T. Greswell was much missed, and opposing teams generally found run-getting ea«y.
