The fact that the publication has been so well supported as to enable it to appear without a break since 1895 is testimony to its worth. Among the many features of the last issue may be mentioned the Inter-Colonial Tournament at Trinidad and the visit of W. Shepherd’3 team to British Guiana (where a total of 529 was registered against the side) and Trinidad. Mr. J. Wynfred Gibbons, who founded the Annual in 1895, is still responsible for its production. * The Barbados Cricketers Annual for 1900-10. Edited and com piled b y J. W ynfred Gibbons. Barbados: Globe Office, Victoria Street. Price, Is. ODE TO A “ RABBIT.” (W ith acknow ledgm ents to Punch). When, striding boldly to the stumps, you take ‘ ‘ Two leg ” or “ middle,” as the case may be, It is not yours, my lop-eared friend, to make The crowd, a-quiver with expectancy, Remark, “ That’s him ” (or “ he ”). Yours is a humbler lo t: to go in last, Scratch for some half-a-dozen ba'ls or so, Then, with the ecstasy of batting past, To stand bow-legged and let the boun daries go Serenely through the bow. Save when, Dame Fortune frowning on the side And batsmen garnering a goodly bunch, You bowl (the tenth expedient to be tried) The sort of stuff that even I could punch All day, except at lunch. Full many a time and oft I’ve heard you say, Politely smiling as the captain cursed, You play the best that lies in you to play; In zeal, at any rate, the peer of H ir s t . Defend us from your worst! Still, your’re a sportsman (let our censure cease). You do not play because you hope to find A bubble glory at the popping crease; Love of the game it is that fills your mind. Love can be very blind. OBITUARY. Mr. G. J. C o u r th o r pe . Mr. George John Ciurthorpe, J.P., D.L., of the Eton Eleven of 1867, died suddenly of heart failure at Whiligh, Ticehurst, Sussex, on September 9th in his sixty-third year. He did not play in the match with Harrow at Lord’s but appeared against Winchester, taking two wickets and scoring 13. Eton, who won by an innings and 10 runs, had many good players in their side that year, among them being C. R. Alexanler (captain), C. I. Thornton, C. J. Ottawa.y, W. (3. Higgins and W. F. 1ritton. Mr. Courthorpe proceeded to Christ Church, Oxford, but did not obtain his Blue. He had been a member of the M.C.C. since 187‘2 and was father of Mr. G. L. Courthorpe, M.P. for the Rye Division of Sussex. On the morning of the 8th inst. he acted as Chairman of the Hurst Green Petty Sessions and in the evening addressed a meeting of Territorials at Wadhurst. He returned to bed at his usual hour apparently in good health, but soon after midnight was taken ill aud died almost immediately. J.D B. HAM PSTEAD v.
