A fter a blank day on M onday ow ing to rain it was decided to start play on the second day at eleven o ’clock, but it was n ot until 40 m inutes later that it was found possible to comm ence. Sussex, winning the toss, w ent in first and in 210 m inutes com pleted their innings for 153. The outstanding feature of the play was the batting of Vine, who, going in first, carried out his bat for 72. He was m issed w hen 38 but played a capital gam e for his side. The only player w ho gave him m uch assistance was Chaplin, who scored 37 and helped to add 72 in 80 m inutes for the fourth w icket. Burrows, for w hom the ground was too slow , took three wickets, but Cuffe was far m ore effective. In ju st over an hour and a-half before stum ps were drawn W orcestershire m ade 74 for three w ickets before poor light caused play to cease for the day. Bow ley and Pearson made 49 for the first w icket in 65 m inutes b y quiet cricket, and at the end of the day the visitors, w ith seven wickets in hand, were only 79 runs behind. The w icket was difficult yesterday and W orcestershire gained a lead of only 2 on the innings. Bum s batted skilfully for an hour and a-quarter and H unt m ade som e good strokes in scoring 21 not out. D uring the m orning Killick took six w ickets for 40. Going in the second tim e, Sussex were saved from a collapse by Robert Relf who scored 50 out of 72 in 70 m inutes and 100 out of 161 in 130. H is only useful partner was Killick, w ho helped to put on 94 after six w ickets had fallen for 64. W hen he had reached three-figures the innings was closed, and W orcestershire had m ade only 56 for five w ickets of the 160 runs required when the m atch was given up ow ing to failing light.
