SURREY. Played at Lord’s on August 29, 30 an J 31. Drawn. A fter an idle day 011 M onday ow ing to rain the start of this m atch was delayed on Tuesday until noon and there were a couple of interruptions later. Surrey gained an advantage by w inning the toss and late in the afternoon declared - prem aturely, as m any thought—w ith eight w ickets dow n for 221 , leaving M iddlesex an hour in w hich to bat before stum ps were drawn. H ayward was iu an hour for 4, but H obbs scored 59 out o f 94 in 95 m inutes by faultless aud skilful cricket. The best batting of the day was show n by Cam pbell, w ho forced the game splendidly and obtained his 55 out of 80 iu 50 m inutes : he hit tw o G’s and six 4’s in his delightful display. Hayes m ade his 60 in 135 m inutes, but was not seen at his best, though his innings was a m ost valuable one. M iddlesex quickly lost Douglas and H endren, but b y the end of the day W arner and Tarrant had taken the score to 47 w ithout further loss. Yesterday the weather show ed a great im provem ent, the conditions being alm ost rem iniscent of summ er. For som e tim e runs cam e readily, chiefly from Warner, w ho played w ith confidence from the start. The follow -on was saved w ith only tw o m en out, and it was not until the third w icket had added 02 in 05 m inutes that Tarrant was caught at long-on. Then follow ed three useful stands, Hearne (J. W .) helping to put on 28, Baker 48, and Mann 42. The last-nam ed hit freely and w ell for 32, though he was alm ost caught off Platt w hen 18. Warner reached 50 in 110 m inutes and 100 in three hours and a-half ; in all he m ade 137 out of 261 in 240 m inutes, being first in and last out, and hit fourteen 4’s and ten 3’s in his chanccless display. It was a great innings in m ore senses than one. The m ajority of his runs were m ade on the on-side, but he also drove w ith fine vigour and judgm ent. W hen Surrey w ent in again, w ith arrears of 40, Tarrant and Hearne (J. T.) shared the attack. Hayward and Hobbs played carefully at first, but afterw ards runs cam e steadily until at 37 Hayward was bow led in attem pting a big hit. Hcarne’s figures were then 53 balls for 2 runs and a wicket. W ith Ha 3 ’cs in the balance against the side was w iped out. Hobbs, w ho m ade a good hit for 0 off Tarrant, was second out, at 73, but w ickets after wards w ent dow n so quickly that w hen stum ps were diaw n the score was 107 for seven. Hearne, who was chiefly responsible for tho breakdown, took five w ickets for 30. Score and analysis :— S u r r e y . First innings. Sccond innings.
