Surrey gained a w inning advantage on the first day when, after dism issing the hom e side in an hour and three-quarters for 94, they scored 302 for six w ickets in three and a-quarter hours. The Leicestershire m en were evidently under the im pression that the w icket w ould becom e more difficult as the day advanced, and in an endeavour to score quickly lost all their w ickets cheaply. Sharp and Coe added 28 in 40 m inutes, the form er hitting two 6 ’s in his 33 and the latter carrying out his bat for 15. Hobbs batted superbly for Surrey, although m issed w hen 73, and in m aking 116 out of 198 in 135 m inutes hit tw o 6 ’s and thirteen 4’s: w ith H ayward he m ade 66 in an hour and w ith Hayes 132 in 75 m inutes. There was a heavy dow n fall of rain in the night, but a drying w ind enabled play to be resum ed just before four o’clock on Friday. D uring the 150 m inutes play was in progress Surrey com pleted their innings for an addition of 57 and got four Leicestershire w ickets dow n for 108. Cam pbell batted adm irably for an hour and a-quarter, but he m ight have been caught at long-on w hen 42. The hom e side m ade a poor start upon going in the second tim e, losing W ood at 26, W hitehead at 34 and Coe at 42. Then, however, Sharp and K night added 27 and the latter and Crawford 39 w ithout further loss. K night gave an extrem ely good display and carried out his bat for 60 at the end of the day. Crawford was bow led on the third day w ith only 2 runs added and w ith no- one else reaching double-figures the m atch was concluded by ten m inutes past twelve. K night played a m ost skilful innings on a bowlers’ w icket, scoring 73 in tw o hours and hitting tw o 6 ’s and five 4’s. Score and ans ’ L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . F irst innings. C. J. B.
