S e p t . r , 1 9 1 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 373 ESSEX v. WORCESTERSHIRE. Played at Leyton on August 25, 26 and 27. Worcestershire won by one wicket. W ith M ajor Turner, H. K. Foster and Simpson* Hoy ward away, neither side was at full strength for this m atch. Runs on the first day were difficult to make, and in tw o hours and a-half Essex, w ho w on the toss, were put out for 129. Douglas, first in and eighth out, m ade 37 out of 89 in tw o hours, and Buckenham m ade som e good hits, but the others could do little w ith Burrow s and Cuffe, who shared the w ickets between them . W orcestershire lost Pearson at 2, but Bow ley and Arnold added 67 in 57 m inutes for the second w icket, and Foster and Burns 66 in 35 m inutes w ithout being separated for the fourth. When stum ps were drawn the visitors, w ith seven w ickets in hand, were 11 runs on. A fter heavy rain during the night the game could not be continued on Friday until half-past four. Foster and Burns stayed together for 33 m inutes more, their stand altogether realising 106 in 70 m inutes. The form er was in for a couple of hours and played flawless cricket ou a w icket w hich helped the bowlers. He obtained his runs b y a variety of strokes and hit a dozen 4’s. A t the end of the day Worcestershire, w ith a w icket in hand, were 104 runs on. The innings closed on the third day for an addition of 3, and Essex, going in against a balance of 107, for som e tim e fared badly. A. L. Gibson, Douglas and Gillingham were out for 48, but Perrin and Fane added 37 together and the latter and M cGahey 74. Subsequently the game w ent in favour of Worcestershire and the innings ended for 190. Cuffe, w ho took one w icket for 12 runs, w ould have bowled m ore had he not been suffering from a chill. W orcestershire were left w ith 84 to w in. Buckenham , bow ling at a great pace, had all the players in difficulty. H alf the side were out for 59 and w hen the ninth w icket fell at 74 the position appeared to favour Essex. Burrows, how ever, played w ell in the crisis and w ith Bale obtained the rem aining runs am id m uch excitem ent. Buckenham took eight w ickets for 5 runs each and made a catch. A t 138, in Lancashire’s sccond innings, Row lands, batting at the Stretford end, played a ball to m id off, and Blom ­ ley attem pted a run, w hich Rowlands refused, both m en being at the same end. For som e seconds all the players seemed at a loss to know w hat to do, the stum per’s w icket being broken w ithout the batsm en having crossed. W arner’s innings of 145 not out dw arfed every­ thing ek e in this m atch on Thursday. G oing in first, he carried his bat through the innings for 1-15 m ade out of 279 in four hours and a half. He reached 50 out of 98 in 105 m inutes and 100 out of 190 in three hours and a-quarter, hit thirteen 4’s and scored equally w ell all round the wicket. He found his m ost useful partner in Saville who stayed w hilst 64 were added for the eighth w icket in 50 minutes^ In the last 20 m inutes of the day Ham pshire m ade 15 runs w ithout loss. Very heavy rain caused tho continuance of this m atcli to be delayed until a-quarter past four on Friday. Hampshire had an up-hill task, and during the hour and a-half’s play possible lost six w ickets for 106 runs. The m ajority of the players w ere caught in trying to hit. On Saturday the innings ended after 25 m inutes’ play for an addition of 14, the* side thus ju st failing to save the follow -on. Going in the second tim e, the H am pshire men gave a very disappointing exhibition on the slow , difficult wicket and in just over an hour and a-half were got rid of for 115.
