37 2 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . i , 1 9 1 0 . from Captain Wynyard reports concerning the fine bowling of Yogler and Faulkner, who are both “ googlie” Iowlers of high-class merit. In 48 wickets lost by the English man iu Test matches against the South Africans Vogler was responsible for tbe exit of 19. The article is excellently illustrated, and so clear to me seeu.s Mr. Vaile’s explana’ion regarding the “ gonplie ” break, that if I were starting my cricket career I would most certainly try to cultivate the “ googlie.” CRICKET IN INDIA. THE BRIGHTON FESTIVAL. Drawn. D uring the three hours and 50 m inutes that play was possible on Thursday Yorkshire made 215 for four w ickets. For that good score they were indebted alm ost w holly to W ilson and Rhodes, who, com ing together w ith four m en out for 74, added 171 w ithout being parted in less than two hours and a-half, the form er being 101 not out at the end of the day and the latter 77. Heavy rain prevented the gam e from being continued on Friday before three o ’clock, and then things w ent badly for Sussex. Yorkshire took their total to 314, the last six w ickets adding 09 in 55 m inutes. The stand of Wilson and Rhodes realised 182 runs in 155 m inutes. N either player m ade a m istake of any kind, and the form er hit seven 4’s and the latter eleven. The w icket was all in favour of the attack w hen Sussex w ent in, and but for a fifth-w icket stand of 53 by R elf (A. K.) and Chaplin w ould have collapsed com pletely. As it was, six m en were out for 85 at the end of the day. H irst, assisted by a strong cross-wind, took five of the w ickets—all bowled dow n. By the tim e the gam e was resum ed on Saturday the w icket had dried considerably, and the Sussex tail did so w ell that the last four w ickets pu t on 155. Chaplin played an admirable game, hitting loose balls severely and scoring his 71 in tw o hours and 10 m in u tes: he hit ten 4’s. Cox, who defended strongly for 100 m inutes, helped him to add 75 in 95 m inutes for the seventh w icket. With Jupp and Vincett together the follow -on was saved and before the innings closed the score was taken to w ithin 74 of that of Yorkshire. Jupp played very steadily for 32 not out and added 35 w ith Vincett for the ninth w icket and 57 (in 27 m inutes) w ith Butt for the last. When Yorkshire w ent in again the play was very slow and uninteresting, Myers and Bates taking nearly an hour to score 39, but Denton m ade am ends by m aking 50 him self in an hour. The innings was declared w ith three w ickets down for 133, leaving Sussex an hour in w hich to bat before the drawing of stum ps. The cricket was not taken seriously, all the regular bowlers being rested. Score and analysis:— Y orkshire . First innings. Second innings. Capt. A. D. Legard, b R elf (R.
