Cricket 1910
3 6 6 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g u s t 25, 1910. A KENT RECORD. During the past week Woolley has obtained his one-thousandth run of the season, having previously secured his one hundredth wicket. Thereby he has accomplished what no other Kent cricketer has ever performed, lor his cricket this year has been restricted entirely to county matches. Nine years ago Mr. J. R. Mason credited himself with 1,561 runs and 118 wickets in all first-class matches, but for Kent alone his aggregates were 1,467 and 92 respectively. In the circumstances it will be well to set forth Woolley’ s doings this season in detail. Runs. Against. Bow ling. 31 & 15 Ox. This gives a total of 1,029 runs (aver. 27 07) and 126 wickets (aver. 13'53). Frank Edward Woolley is a Kent man by every tie, for he was born at Tonbridge on May 27th, 1887, and learnt all his cricket in his native county. Everyone knows, or should know, that he is left-handed both as batsman and bowler, that he has modelled his delivery on that of Blythe and that with the bat his free-swinging style recalls the delightful displays which Francis Ford gave fifteen to twenty years ago. He is every inch a cricketer, for he loves the game of which he is so great an exponent, is modest in tbe hour of success, and never seeks for an excuse when he has failed—as every player must do at times. It is always risky to prophesy at cricket, but we feel that one may assert that, unless something quite unforeseen occurs, Kent’s brilliant young left-hander will be found doing duty for England in the Triangular Tournament the year after next.
