Cricket 1910

A u g u s t 25, 1910 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3 6 5 HAMPSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Portsmouth on August 22, 23 and 24. Yorkshire won by 6 runs. W. H. B. Evans m ade his first appearance of the season for Bam pshire, w hilst on the Yorkshire side Capt. Legard, of the 16th Rifles, appeared instead of Bates. As the result of som e interesting cricket on a w icket w hich helped the bowlers Yorkshire, with a w icket dow n in their second innings, were 8 runs behind w hen play ceased on Monday. Showers restricted the game to four hours, but during that tim e so m uch progress was m ade that tw enty-one w ickets fell for 258 runs. The batting on both sides was weak, and to it was largely due the small scoring. N ewm an did excellent w ork for H am p shire, and H irst bow led splendidly for a couple of hours. The best batting was that of Rhodes, who played skilfully for three-quarters of an-hour. On Tuesday Booth and Dolphin m ade a plucky stand, added 73 in 05 m inutes for the second w icket, Dolphin then being stum ped for 39. W ith Denton in rain causcd an interruption, and soon after the resum ption the player nam ed was caught at third man for 16. A lm ost im m ediately afterwards Booth was caught at slip after batting 100 m inutes for 42, and w ith H irst and Rhodes out six w ickets were dow n for 139 and seven for 130. Haigh, however, played in resolute fashion and found a useful partner in Rothery, w ith w hom 78 were added in an hour by capital cricket. Haigh hit seven 4’s and a 3, and after batting for tw o hours Rothery carried out his bat for 29. Hants were left w ith 240 to w in, and w hen H irst had bowled a m aiden over to Newm an and M cD onell stum ps were drawn for the day. On W ednesday H am pshire had to bat 011 a w icket w hich favoured the attack, heavy rain being follow ed by bright sunshine. A t 7 M cDonell was caught at short-leg, at 23 Newm an was held at slip, and when Mead and Llew ellyn fell to Booth in one over a collapse appeared quite possible, four w ickets being dow n for 20. Johnston and W hite played fine cricket, and in 55 m inutes put on 43, whilst, after the form er was out, Evans continued the good w ork, scoring 30 ere being lbw to Rhodes. His stand w ith W hite realised 04 in 70 m inutes. The last-nam ed played a splendid gam e for his side, and after he was out Stone and Bowell only just failed to pull off the game. Played at Brighton on August 22, 23 and 24. Drawn. Rain restricted M onday’s play to an hour and a-half, during w hich tim e Essex, w ho won the toss, scored OS for the loss of four wickets. On Tuesday Fane and M cGahey rem ained together until the fifth w icket had added 33 in an hour. Another useful stand was m ade w ith the form er and A . L. Gibson together, 41 being added in 35 m inutes. After Fane had been caught at the w icket, the cousins Gibson put on 49 in three-quarters of an hour, but the last three w ickcts did little and the innings closed for 203. Robert Relf cam e out w ith the fine analysis of eight for 7 9 — one of the best pieces of bow ling he lias yet accom plished. The Sussex innings was interrupted by rain, and when 34 had been made for tw o w ickets stum ps were drawn. On Wednesday Cartwright was Ibw with 2 added, tu t the brothers Relf (both of whom were m issed) stayed together for an hour during which they pu t on 93. R obert batted for 75 m inutes and Albert for 110. K illick and Butt alone of the others did m uch, but they added 59 for the last w icket. G oing in again, Essex, after a poor start, were enabled to save the gam e by a good stand b y Fane and McGahey. The closing stages of the gam e naturally lacked interest.
