A u g u s t i 8 , 1 9 1 0 . CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. KENT. Played at Cheltenham on August 11 and 12. THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL. A TOTAL OF 607 FOB SIX WICKETS. Kent won by an innings and 242 runs. The Kent Eleven gave a remarkable display of batting on Thursday, scoring during the day 60r runs for six wickets in five hours. The work of Gloucestershire in the field was very good indeed, and some of the catches which were made were brilliant. Humphreys made his 162 out of 378 in 190 minutes, scoring well all round the wicket and offering the only chance (when 137) missed during the day : he hit a 6and twenty-four 4’s and made 93 in 65 minutes with Knott, 140 in 75 with Seymour (who hit nineteen 4’s in his delightful and faultless display), 93 in lialf-an-hour with Hutchings and 52 in 20 minutes with Woolley. Mason, after adding 85 in 40 minutes with Hooman, put on 134 in 55 minutes without further loss in 55 minutes with Huish. When stumps were drawn Mason was 121 not out and Huish 44. Kent made 100 in 70 minutes, 200 in 123, 300 in 165, 400 in 210, 500 in 260, and 600 in 297. Driving with great power, Mason hit a <i and nineteen 4’s: he scored his 121 out of 218 in 95 minutes without a chance. On Friday morning the innings was declared closed first thing. Gloucestershire made a deplorable start, losing Langdon at 1 and Salter at 3. Board and Sewell added 54 in 35 minutes, the latter hitting seven 4’s. Of the others only Jessop did much, and he was in for 50 minutes for 35. In the follow-on Langdon again failed, as did Jessop, and the latter’s early dismissal was a great blow. Salter, Sewell and Champain stayed for some time, but the result was never in doubt. Score and analysis K ent . F. H. Played at Taunton on August 11, 12 and 13. Worcestershire won by 295 runs. On the first day Somerset failed to show such good form as against Kent earlier in tho week, for, after fielding whilst 303 runs were made, they lost four wickets for 121. The conditions were all in favour of run-getting, and during the afternoon 424runs were obtained in four hours 50 minutes. After Bowley and H. K. Foster had been got rid of for 34, Burns and Pearson put on 85 in 45 minutes, and the latter and Arnold 65 in 40. Burns made six 4’s in his 56, but the best batting was shown by Arnold, who, hitting well to the off, made a 6 and dozen 4’s during his stay of nearly two hours. During the innings A. E. Newton made four good catches at the wicket. Like Worcestershire, Somerset made a poor start. Both Hardy and Greswell were out for 11, and at 54 Burrows bowled Johnson and Samson in an over. Lewis, who hit four 4’s and a single off Burns in an over, was missed when 34 and 39. With Braund he put on 67 in 40 minutes without loss, the latter making 35 not out by means of eight 4’s and three singles. Friday’s play saw* the game go in favour of the visitors, who, after gaining a lead of 86 on the innings, set their opponents 420 to win. Lewis and Braund, who had done so well the previous evening, remained together until they had put on 99 for the fifth wicket in an hour: the former hit eleven 4’s and the latter ten. Robson, missed when 16, stayed to make 44, but the last four wickets fell for 7 runs, and the innings closed for 217. Worcestershire made 333 when they went in the second time by very consistent cricket. Bowley was out at 18, but H. K. Foster and Pearson added 58 in 25 minutes, and the former and Burns 56 in half-an-hour. Arnold made 69 in 85 minutes, put on 76 in 35 minutes with Cuffe and hit a 6 and seven 4’s. Somerset never looked like making the runs on Saturday, and were badly beaten. The only stand of the innings was by Samson and Brauud, who added 5S in 45 minutes. Buslier bowled very successfully at the close. Score and acalysis:— W orcestershire . First innings. Second innings. H. K.
