Cricket 1910

3 2 6 CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g u s t i i , 1910. WARWICKSHIRE y. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on August 4, 5 and 6. Warwickshire won by 143 runs. In this their last home match of the season, Warwickshire scored 279 on Thursday and got three Derbyshire wickets down for 61. Charles worth followed up his recent good scores by one of 89. Forcing the game well, he made the runs in 130minutes and hit a 6 and eight 4’s. Kinneir and Byrne also were seen to advantage, and Baker took out his bat for a serviceable 42. After Derbyshire had lost three wickets for 34, Sale and Cadman added 27 without being separated ere stumps were drawn. Matters went much in favour of the home side on Friday, and at the end of the day they were 276 runs on with four wickets in hand. For some time Derbyshire fared badly, the total being only 120 when the ninth wicket fell. Ten runs were then wanted to save the follow-on, and Forester and Humphries, rising to the occasion, put on 87 by vigorous cricket: the former hit a 6 and seven 4’s in his plucky and meritorious display. Warwickshire, going in again, made 204 for six wickets before stumps were drawn. Lilley, hitting a 6 and eight 4's, made 67 in 110 minutes, whilst Quaife, batting steadily, was in for nearly two hours and a-half for 60: together they put on 85 for the third wicket. During the innings Morton obtained his 100th wicket of the season. On the third morning the innings closed for 221, leaving Derbyshire 294 to win—a task they never seemed likely to accomplish. At lunch half the side were out for 87, and after the interval Foster bowled in great form and Warwick shire won easily. Score and analysis W a r w ic k s h ir e . First innings. Second innings. During the three hours and a-half that cricket was possible on Thursday the visitors (who included four players named Tyldesley in their team) made 284 for five wickets. Makepeace was bowled at 19, but, following his dismissal, Tyldesley (W .) and Tyldesley (J. T.) added 155 for the second wicket in 105minutes, and the latter and Sharp 77 for the third in 45. Tyldesley (J. T.) made his 124 out of 242 in two hours and three-quarters and hit ten 4’s: he hit brilliantly all round the wicket, especially to the off, but was badly missed by Haywood in the long-field when 5. On Friday play was restricted by rain and hail to less than half-an-hour, during which time Heap and Hornby added 30 runs off the nine overs sent down. First thing on Saturday the innings was declared closed. To a certain point Northants did fairly well, three figures going up in their first innings with only four men out. But the side were out for 114, despite Thompson’s admirable batting for two hours and a-quarter. In the follow-on they were got rid of in two hours and 20 minutes for 88, Heap, although hit by Smith for 20 runs in an over, taking nine wickets for 43. In the whole match he dismissed fourteen men for 93 runs—a good day’s work. Score and analysis :— L a n c a s h ir e .
