A u g u s t 4, 1910. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 317 NORTHANTS v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Northampton on August 1, 2 and 3. Northanta won by four wicketa. As the result of some level play on the opening day, Leicestershire scored 224 in three hours and a-half, and Northants replied with 146 for the loss of five wickets in a couple of hours. For the visitors Wood played sound cricket for 145minutes, and in partnership with Whitehead added 08 for the second wicket in SO minutes. East, owing to lumbago, could not continue batting on Tuesday, but Hawtin remained until he had made 76 in 170 minutes, his highest score for the county. When the innings closed the side were 23 in arrears, but they recovered some of the ground by getting rid of Knight and Wood for 35. Whitehead was bowled at 58, but afterwards Turner and Coe put on 75 in 45 minutes. Then, however, came a collapse, only Crawford being seen to any advantage. The last seven wickets fell for 60 runs. Northants were set 217 to win, and by the ond of the day had made 111 for the loss of Seymour, Vials and Smith. Yesterday, thanks to Tool, the remaining runs were obtained for the loss of three more wickcts. Score and analysis:— L eicestershire . First innings. C. J. B. Played at Leyton on August 1, 2 and 3. Essex won by 271 runs. There was some surprising cricket in this match on Monday, Essex, batting first on a pitch which seemed in excellent order for run-getting, losing nine wickets for 134 runs in two hours and fifty minutes. Tremlin then joined McGahey and in 65 minutes 92 runs were added for the last partnership, but tho fieldsmen had only themselves to blame, for each player was missed. Derbyshire were not seen to much advantage upon going in, and although five players reached double-figiu-es seven wickets went down for 76 by the end of the dajT. There was rain during the night, but the pitch appeared to be affected very slightly indeed when the game was continued. Derbyshire’s last three wickets added 30, and the side were therefore 120 behind on the innings. Going in the second time, Essex lost both Douglas aud Freeman (E. J.) at 23, but Perrin and Gillingham made a useful stand until the latter was bowled by a ball which broke the centre stump. Two interruptions by rain occurred whilst Perrin and Turner were together. The former, fifth out (at 115) batted 110 minutes, and McGahey, not out 51 when stumps were drawn with seven wickets down for 217, found a useful colleague in Bucken ham (28 not out) who helped to add 61 without being parted. Owing to an injury Morton was unable to bowl much after lunch. On Wednesday morning the innings was closed without any addition, leaving the visitors 338 to win. At lunch three wickets were down for 37, and after the interval the remaining six fell for 29, Essex gaining the easiest of victories. Score and analysis :— E ssex . First innings. J. W. II. T.
