Cricket 1910
3 l6 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ugust 4, 1910. SURREY v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Played at the Oval on August 1 and ‘2. Surrey won by an innings and 143 runs. It was shown that the meeting of these counties lias almost as great an attraction as ever for the August Bank-Holiday folk, for at one time during the afternoon quite 20,000 persons must have been on the ground, seeing that 10,309 paid for admission. Surrey had every reason to be satisfied with the day’s play, for they scored 3V0 in five hours and in the last few minutes got rid of George Gunn with only 8 scored. The feature of the cricket was the batting of Mayward, who made 120 out of 244 in 185 minutes without a mistake and hit aO and ten 4’s. He scored 48 with Hobbs, 149 with Hayes and 47 with Bush. Hayes made some capital off-strokes and hit adozen 4’s. Kirk, who (like Leveson-Gower) was making his first appearance of the season, also hit well, and, although Clifton claimed the last four wickets for (3runs, a total of 370 was recorded. On Tuesday Notts, who had seen the home side run up a fine score on a good wicket on the previous day, were obliged to bat on a pitch ruined by rain, the consequence being that before half-past five the side had met with a severe defeat. Smith, aided by the conditions, took ten wickets for 100 runs, his analysis in the second innings being five for 26. Kirk supported him well by dismissing seven men for 52. In scoring 172 in their first innings Notts did really well. Jones, who scored 35, was missed twice when 13, but Payton made no mistake during the 75 minutes he was in. In the follow-on only John Gunn reached double-figures, and the last six wickets went down for 9 runs. The Notts men struck one as being somewhat disheartened, but the Surrey bowling and fielding were very good. Score and analysis:— S urrey . Played at Lord’s on August 1 and 2 and won by M.C.C. by two wickets after a finely-contested game. Everything in the match was dwarfed by the batting of Knott, who scored 155 out of 242 in 145 minutes and hit a 6 and nineteen 4’s. With Knight he added 121 for the second wicket in 70 minutes. In the second innings of the M.C.C. Fowler did the hat-trick at the expense of Lee, Ricketts and Christie. Score and analysis:— P ublic S chools . First innings. Second innings. I. P. F. Both sides were well represented in this match, and Messrs. Mason and James Douglas made their first appearance of the season. It had been decided that Seymour should be left out of the Kent team, but, fortunately for the side, he was retained when it was found that Fielder was not well enough to play. Kent batted throughout the day, scoring 393 for sevenwickets, and Seymour, going inat 19, carried out his bat for 193. With Hooman he put on 15S for the sixth wicket in less than two hours after half the side were out for 115, and with Mason added 117 for the seventh in SO minutes. He should have been caught when 140, but no other chance can be debited to him. On Tuesday, on a wicket severely affected by rain, the innings closed for 412. Seymour was out ere a run had been added. He made his 193 out of 374 in four hours and fifty minutes, hit twenty-five 4’s and offered only one chance—when 140. The state of the wicket was altogether against heavy scoring, and Middlesex were in consequence very unfortunate. In their first innings — during which Tarrant made his 1,000th run of the season and Woolley took his 100th wicket—they were dismissed for 96, their last five wickets falling for 9 runs. Tarrant, in first, was fifth out (at 87) for 59, made in just over an hour and a-half. Woolley was the most effective bowler in the first innings and Carr in the second. Hendren played a good game for two hours and a-half and hit a 6 to square-leg and seven 4’s, but the result was never in doubt. During the day 4,899 persons paid for admission.
