Cricket 1910

A u g u s t 4, 1910. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3*5 HAMPSHIRE v. SUSSEX. Played at Southampton on August 1, 2 & 3. Drawn. Sussex gave a rather remarkable display on Monday, reaching a total of 418 after making a very poor start. After losing three men for 28, Vine and Killick added 68, but, that notwithstanding, half the side were out for 117. Chaplin, fortunately for the side, did better than ever before and made his first hundred for the county. He received such excellent support, too, that the last five wickets added 301. With Jupp 45 were put on in half an-hour, with Leach 76 in 35minutes, with Vincent 53 in half-an- hour and with Butt 99 in 37 minutes. By flawless cricket Chaplin scored 172 in 170 minutes and carried out his bat. His chief hits were twenty- four 4’s. In the last few minute3 of the day Hampshire made 15 runs without loss. Heavy rain during the following morning delayed play until ten minutes to three, when, without a run added, Stone was caught at cover. With Mead and Johnston together a good stand was made, the pair, during the two hours and three-quarters they were together, adding 192 runs for the second wicket. Mead in his fine innings gave no chance and hit ten 4’s: Johnston hit three 6’s (drives) and six 4’s and played a ball on to his wicket. When stumps were drawn four men were out fur 249. On the third morning Greig and Brown put on 92 for the fifth wicket, but the last five wickets went down for 39 and the innings closed for £67. Sussex, lead ing by 51, declared with seven down for 144 upon going in again, the elder Relf scoring 47 and Cart wright 31. Time did not permit tho match to be finished, Hants having two wickets down for 66 at the end. Score and analysis :— S ussex . First innings. Second innings. Relf (R. WORCESTER SHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on August 1, 2 and 3. Drawn. Lacking H. K. and G. N. Foster and Simpson- Hayward, the visitors were not at full strength for this match, and on the opening day had all the worst of the play. On a good wicket they were dismissed for 191, the only player to show any confidence being Turner, who carried out his bat for 49. In response Warwickshire made 146 for the loss of only one wicket. After Lilley had been caught at 30, Kinneir and Charlesworth added 116 without being parted, tho latter, who carried out his bat for 71, making his 1,000th run of the season. During the 105 minutes that play was possible on Tuesday Charlesworth played a fine forcing game and enabled his side to gain a lead of 95 runs with half their wickets in hand. In all he made 133 out of 214 in 160 minutes, was missed several times— when 93, 102 and 119—in hitting out; his chief strokes were twenty-two 4’s. His stand with Kinneir for the second wicket realised 131 in 110 minutes. Yesterday the game was greatly inter fered with by rain, and after Warwickshire had declared with five wickets down for 288 and Wor cestershire had made 13 without lo>s the game was abandoned.
