3 10 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME A u g u s t 4, 1910. RUGBY y . MARLBOROUGH. Played at Lord’s on July 27 and 28 and won by Rugby by an innings. It was Marlborough’s first defeat of the season, but as they were without Woodroffe, their best bowler, there was some excuse for their reverse. Still, on the form shown, Rugby were clearly the better side. Shuldham, hitting eleven 4’s, made his 70 out of 107 in an hour, playing a really fine innings. For Rugby Andrews scored 103 out of 213 in 70 minutes: he hit ten 4’s, and with Fraser added 130 for the second wicket in 70 minutes. During the first day 561 runs were made for eighteen wickcts in under six hours. Linnington, a medium-paced bowler who had taken eight wickets on tbe first day, was quite over shadowed when Marlborough went in for the second time by Le Gros (fast right), who obtained nine wickets and caught the tenth. Rungetting proved so difficult a matter on Thurs day that, although play lasted nearly five hours, only 231 runs were made during the day for eleven wickets. In the circumstances, Sussex did well to make as many as 196. Relf (R. R.) scored all the first 18 runs credited to the side, and, after three wickets had fallen at 20, Killick and Relf (A. E.) added 50 in an hour a-quarter. The best innings of the day was played by Chaplin, who made 54 out of 75 in 95 minutes, and carried out his bat: his chief strokes were six 4’s. Myers had the best analysis, but Hirst caused the batsmen most trouble. A feature of the innings was the fielding of Yorkshire. In 45minutes at the end of the day the home side made 35 for the loss of Wilson. There was rain during the night, and on the following morning Yorkshire’s fourth wicket fell at 81. A collapse on the drying wicket appeared likely, but Hirst found a valuable partner in Myers, the pair remaining together nearly an hour and a-half, during which they added 87. Myers made only 24, but his defence was of the greatest value. Hirst was seventh out (at 208) for 86 made out of 135 in 130minutes: he showed all his old punishing power and hit a dozen 4’s. Yorkshire, after batting for nearly four hours, obtained a lead of 43—a very valuable one in the circumstances. Sussex, going in again, made 169 for nine wickets in just under, three hours before stumps were drawn. Seven players reached double- figures, but the only one to do much was Heygate, who played admirable cricket for 140minutes : he hit nine 4’s and obtained nearly all his 71in front of the wicket. On the third morning the total was increased to 192, leaving Yorkshire 150 to win. For some time it was very doubtful whether the runs would be made, half the wickets being down for 70. At that point Bhodes and Oldroyd came together and put on 71 together at the rate of a run aminute. Their stand, a very meritorious one, decided the fate of the game. Rhodes, who completed his 1,000 runs for the season, batted without a mistake for two hours 35 minutes and hit six 4’s. Score and analysis:— Second innings, b Drake .........13 First innings.
