A u g u s t 4 , 1 9 1 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3°9 LEICESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Leicester on July 28, 29 and 30. Leicestershire won by six wickets. Leicestershire, upon winning the toss, stayed in for the whole of the first day, and in the five hours and 10minutes available scored 439 for eight wickets. The conditions were all in favour of run-getting, but it was nevertheless a splendid performance on the part of the home side. After Wood was caught at slip, at 25, Whitehead and Knight added 174 in two hours for the second wicket. Knight made his runs without a mistake in 150minutes and hit five 4’s, but his partner was missed twice - the first time when 5. Crawford, though lame, subsequently made 35 out of 47 in ‘20 minutes. The best cricket of the day, however, was shown by Coe. who, rather uncertain at the start, settled down to a delightfully free game. He reached 100in two hours and, in all, made 126 in 140 minutes without a mistake of any kind. He hit a six and eighteen 4’s and with Astill added 84 in 55 minutes. On the second morning the total was taken to 493 before the innings closed, 54 being added to the overnight total in half-an- liour. Coc made his vigorous 156 not out in 170 minutes without a chance, driving and cutting well, and hitting two 6’s, a 5 and twenty 4’s. In going in against such a score Lancashire had nothing but a draw to hope for, but they batted very feebly on a good wicket and, when stumps were drawn, still required 106 J'uns to save the innings defeat with half their wickets down in their sccond innings. They were always struggling for runs, losing Spooner to the first ball sent down, Tyldesley (J. T.) at 8 and Hartley at 39. Sharp did his best to pull the game round, and alone did himself justice : he made 62 in 100minutes. In the follow-on Spooner and Tyldesley (J. T.) again failed, the former being out at 10 and the latter four later. Hartley and Sharp, fortunately for the side, obtained a mastery over the bowling, and in an hour and 35 minutes put on 157 for the third wicket. Of that number Sharp made 81 without a mistake. Hartley carried out his bat for 111 at the end of the day, when five wickets were down for 248. On the third day the not-outs, Hartley and Hornby, batted so well that they were not parted until the sixth wicket had put on 145 in two hours, a lead of 8 being obtained ere the former was out. Hartley played excellent cricket for four hours and a-half and hit twenty- three 4’s. Hornby batted for two hours and a-half for S3—a most timely display—but after he was out the others made little headway, and, with White head still absent owing to a chill, the innings closed for 414. This left Leicestershire 61 to win, and in obtaining the number they lost four wickets. Score and analysis L eicestershire . First innings. C. J. B. STAFFORDSHIRE v. WORCESTERSHIRE. Played at Stoke on July 25, 26 and 27 and left drawn. Not a ball could be bowled on either of the first two days owing to rain. On the third day the visitors made 202 for three wickets before lunch and declared, Bowley scoring 108 of the number. He hit five 6’s and six 4’s, but was missed when 9 and 22. Kent placed a very strong team in the field for this match, Hutchings re-appearing and Carr and S. H. Day assisting tho side for the first time during the season. On the first day they gained a distinct advantage, dismissing Worcestershire for 112 and just doubling that total by the end of the day. It should be stated that the home side were without G. N. Foster andSimpson-Hayward. Worcestershire seemed likely to make a good score, for 70 went up with only one man out, but the last eight wickets fell for 39, Fairservice bowling with much success and Carr puzzling all the side. Kent opened disastrously, losing Dillon and Humphreys for a single and Seymour at 29. Hutchings and Woolley then pulled the game round ; the former, who hit two 6’s and five 4’s, made 47 in 55minutes. All the other players reached double-figures, and the home side's total wras doubled. The condition of the ground on Friday, under tho influence of sun and wind after heavy rain, favoured Carr and Blythe, but missed catches told their tale—there were three before Worcestershire had scored 13—and Kent were unable to win without going in the second time. The blunders mentioned enabled Bowley and Pear son to make 60 together in 85 minutes, and for similar reasons Burns and Arnold stayed to add 75 in 65minutes for the fourthwicket. The last-named made his excellent 64 in 130minutes without a mis take, showing strong defence but hitting well when opportunity offered : he hit a 5 and five 4’s. Kent, set 84 to win, lost Humphreys without a run, but Dillon, Seymour and Hutchings obtained the balaneo without much trouble. Score and analysis W orcestershire . First innings.
