3 0 2 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 8 , 1 9 1 0 . YORKSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Bradford on July 25 and 26. Yorkshire won by an innings and 101 runs. Monday’s play was a triumph for Hirst and Booth, who, bowling unchanged got rid of Derbyshire in an hour and three-quarters for 75 and afterwards, when three wickets had fallen cheaply, put on 94 in seventy minutes, each exceeding the half-century. Occasionally the ball kicked, and it always left the ground quickly. Derbyshire had five wickets down for 17 and seven for 29, and it was due largely to some big hitting by Warren that the total reached the proportions it did. As stated, the Yorkshire batting was marked by a fine stand by Hirst and Booth. The former made 53 in 70 minutes and hit nine 4’s, and the latter obtained his 54in 95 minutes and hit four 4’s. When stumps were drawn, York shire had five wickets down for 160. On Tuesday, as the result of some useful batting by the tail, the last five wickets added 74. Myers made 31by rather slow cricket, and Dolphin and Drake put on 34 for the last wicket in 25 minutes. When Derbyshire went in for the second time they never appeared likely to escape a very heavy defeat. The only player on the side who showed much confidence was Morton, who, going in first, carried his bat through the innings for 28. Rhodes, whose bowling was well served by the state of the wicket, enjoyed a great triumph. Score and analysis :— D e r b y s h ir e . First innings. Second innings. SURREY v. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. Played at the Oval on July 25 and 26. REMARKABLE BOWLING BY SMITH. THE HAT-TRICK. Surrey won by an innings and 131 runs. Rain during the night andshowers in the morning combined to cause the start of this match to be delayed until ten minutes to three. In scoring 233 Surrey did much better than at one time seemed likely, for Hobbs, Hayes and Hayward were all out for 33. Bush and Ducat added 31 together and the latter and Bird 44 in 35 minutes. Ducat played a splendid game on the slow wicket, and made 13 off East in an over. He made his 67 out of 124in 90 minutes, hitting with great power, and making a 6, a 5 and seven 4’s. The ninth wicket fell at 179, but some fearless hitting by Strudwick and Smith took the total to 233. Thompson, who was on during almost all the innings, took six wickets for 62 runs and obtained his 100thof the season. In 25 minutes at the end of the day Northants scored 15without loss. On Tuesday, as the result of some extra ordinary bowling by Smith, Northants lost twenty wickets for 87 runs and were beaten by an innings and 131 runs. Smith was master of the situation throughout, and the batting calls for no detailed description. In the first innings he got out East and Haywood with consecutive balls, and, after seeing Wells missed by Hayes off the next delivery, got rid of him with the following, thus taking three wickets in four balls. In the second innings he did the hat-trick at the expense of East, Wells and Haywood, the last-named falling to a well-judged catch in the long-field. Score and analysis :— S u r r e y .
