J u l y 2 8 , x g io CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 9 5 LE1CESXEKSHIBE v. WARWICKSHIBE. Played at Leicester on July 23, 25 and 26. WEEK-END CRICKET. Leicestershire won by an innings & 79 runs. Leicestershire played a bright game on Saturday, when they went in upon winning the toss, Wood being freer in his methods than usual. He and Knight made 83 for the first wicket in an hour and a-half, and the good work was continued when Whitehead went in, the second partnership realising 80. Wood made his 99 by faultless cricket in three hours and hit nine 4’s, whilst Whitehead was in for two hours for 41. Crawford, as usual, played attractive cricket, and obtained his 60 in an hour. The good start make by the side was not main tained, and when the inniugs closed for 333 stumps were drawn for the day. Rain caused play on Monday to be restricted to just over three hours, but during that time Leicestershire established a strong lead by dismissing Warwickshire in 150 minutes for 143. The visitors were obliged to bat on a wicket damaged by rain, and the failure of the side to approach their opponents’ total was not surprising. Baker, who was top scorer, batted for an hour and hit four 4’s : Breeden was in for 70 minutes for 27. Shipman did a very successful piece of bowling at the end of the innings, his deliveries getting up very awkwardly. At the close of the day Lilley aud Kinneir had made 13 together without loss in the follow-on. On Tuesday, rain caused the resumption to be delayed until twelve o’clock. Warwickshire lost Lilley without a run added, and Charlesworth left at 31. The bowlers held the upper hand throughout and got down the remaining eight wickets for 80 runs. Astill, as will be seen, sent down 70 balls for 8 runs and five wickets. Score and analysis :— L eicestersh ire . C. J. B.
