Cricket 1910
CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 8 , 1910. LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Manchester on July 21 and 22. Lancashire won by ten wickets. On Thursday play took place on a dead wicket, and the visitors, after winning the toss, should have made more than 137 runs during the three hours and a-quarter. Dean (who took his 100th wicket of the season), Huddleston and Heap shared the bowling honours, but were all flattered by the bats men’s lack of enterprise. Lancashire lost Hartley at 4, but Spooner and Tyldesley (J. T.) enabled their side to obtain an advantage on the day’s play by adding 74 in 40 minutes. When stumps were drawn with three wickets down for 79, Spooner carried out his bat for 35. A succession of showers did not permit the game being continued on Friday until ten minutes to three, but, this fact notwith standing, the match was finished by the end of the day. Spooner again played brilliantly, but received such poor support that the eighth wicket fell at 147. Hornby subsequently played a rousing game, and Huddleston stayed with him whilst 54 were put on for the ninth wicket in 25 minutes. Dennett, who took seven wickets for 8S runs, bowled very well indeed. In a minority of 65, Gloucestershire collapsed completely when they went in the second time, and in 100 minutes were all out for 76. Heap obtained five wickets for 16 runs, and, in the match, seven for 23. Lancashire won by ten wickets. Score and analysis:— G LOUCESTERSHIRE. First innings. Second innings. Jones, upon winning the toss, sent Sussex in, and his policy was justified, for at the end of the day Notts had made 128 for three wickets in response to a total of 154. For some time, however, it seemed as though no advantage would be gained by the move, for at two o’clock the Sussex score was 106 with only three men out. Afterwards the last seven wickets went down in 75 minutes for 48 runs, Iremonger and Riley bowling with much effect. Notts lost Jones at 2 and Hardstaff at 34, but Gunn (G.) and Payton showed capital form in putting on 73 in 50 minutes. George Gunn scored his 60 out of 107 in 100 minutes and hit seven 4’s. On the second day the home side went well ahead and when stumps were drawn required only 64 runs to win and had all ten wickcts in hand. After losing their seventh wicket at 169, Oates and Riley gave John Gunn good support and a lead of 98 was obtained on the innings. Going in again, Sussex lost three wickets for 36, but after the younger Relf was out, at 63, his brother and Leach put on 72 together in an hour. Iremonger kept a perfect length and was largely responsible for the collapse. Notts wei-e left with only 68 runs to win, and by the end of the day had made 4 without loss (G. Gunn and Oates in). On the third morning the remaining runs were obtained without further loss, Notts gaining the verdict by ten wickets. Oates received a blow in the face from the ball and was obliged to retire.
