Cricket 1910
J u l y 2 8 , 1910. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 9 3 HAMPSHIRE V. SURREY. Played at Southampton on July 21, 22 & 23. THE SOUTHAMPTON WEEK. H am psh ire w on l«y G1 runs. Fortunate to win Ihe toss, as the wicket was, Hampshire had all the best of the first day's play, scoring 260 in three hours and 50 minutes and get ting down five Surrey wickets for 39 runs in a poor light in the last 40 minutes of the day. After Mead and Stone had been got rid of for 14 Llewellyn hit pluckily and somewhat luckily and made his 90 out of 128 in 100 minutes. Driving with great power and bringing-off several well-timed cuts, he hit a G and eleven 4’s, but was missed when 23, 62 and 68. After his departure Brown and Bowell hit up 98 together in 80 minutes and the total reached 266. As stated, Surrey fared badly upon going in at the end of the day. They made a good fight on a bowler’s wicket on Friday, however, but when stumps were drawn required 87 runs to win, and had only four tail-end wickets in hand. Bird distinguished himself greatly, making 66 by brilliant cricket in his first innings and 57 at a most critical time in his second by methods which were equally fine. In the first 70 minutes of the day Surrey made 110 runs for their last five wickets in 70 minutes, although only 14 were scored after the seventh man left. In the afternoon Hampshire found Smith at his best, and in two hours and a quarter were out for 130, leaving the visitors 248 to win—a heavy task as the wicket was. Hayward left in the first over, and the fourth wicket fell at 58. Then Bird and Ducat became associated, and in 50 minutes put on 97 together. Both, however, were out before stumps were drawn. On Saturday tho match was over in 20 minutes, Hampshire winning by 61 runs. Abel made two successive hits for 6 off Llewellyn. Score and analysis: — H AMPSIIIRE. First innings. Mead (C. TJ, were represented by a weak team, but had the best of the first day’8 play, getting rid of Essex for 121 and scoring 132 for eight wickets. There was no outstanding feature of the cricket. For being headed Essex had only themselves to thank, for Tarrant and Crutchley, who made 50 for the first wicket of Middlesex, were both missed. Middlesex won on the second afternoon with the greatest ease, obtaining a lead of 30 on the first innings and, after dismissing Essex for 66, making the 37 runs required without loss. Tarrant had a great deal to do with the result, seeing that he scored 52 runs in the match for once out and took a dozen wickets for 84. Score and analysis:— E ssex . First innings. J.W. H. T.
