286 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . HAMPSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Southampton on July 18 and 19. THE SOUTHAMPTON WEEK. Hampshire won by an innings and 15 runs. On Monday Hampshire did an extremely good per formance in dismissing Derbyshire for 131 and then establishing a load of 73 with six wickets in hand. Their out-cricket was vei'y keen, and the visitors were got rid of in two hours and a-half. Mead and Stone scored 84 in an hour for Hampshire’s first wicket, and Johnston, who hit freely but was missed when 8, carried out his bat for 61 at the end of the day. Altogether, the stand for the fifth wicket added 81 in an hour. Johnston batted for 130 minutes for his runs, and made only the one mistake. Capt. Greig remained unbeaten to the finish, and was unfortunate not to roach his hundred for he played confident cricket from the start. In their second innings Derbyshire lost three good wickets for 8 runs, and although Chapman and Cadman added 46 together for the fifth wicket and Jelf and Humphries 54 for the last, the innings defeat could not be saved. Newman took seven wickets for 77 runs and, in the match, ten for twelve runs each. Score and analysis:— D e r b y sh ir e . First innings. A TR AG ED Y OF THE CRICKET F IE L D . There was a real calamity at the Hove County Ground yesterday. The eat was killed. We would have called it a catas trophe, but the subject is too serious for a joke. Poor old puss, black where she wasn’t any other colour, she was as familiar at a county cricket match as the captain of the eleven. She would lie just in front of the pavilion and bask contentedly in the sun shine while the boundary hits went whizzing past her. At exciting moments, when spectators could hardly breathe in their suspense, she would saunter out into the field and leisurely perform her toilet. A day or two ago she brought out two young kittens to show them the best place for viewing the game. She earned her place, for she waged relentless war upon the dogs who ventured into the sacred arena. She knew that dogs had no business there. The dog is not content with being a passive spectator : he is so convinced that the ball is hit his way for him to fetch it. Many a dog has fled in terror before puss’s venomous hiss and scarifying claw. At a recent match she absolutely “ chivied ” a dog all the way down the field. It didn’t want to go, and wouldn’t run ; but puss followed it as a policeman moves on an obstructing hawker, giving it a push—and a scratch—every time it stopped. Yesterday afternoon puss saun tered across the cinder path to tell her kittens Sussex were beating Leicestershire, when a great blundering motor-car swooped round a corner and crushed out every one of her nine lives. Poor puss! The sight of that battered body lying limp across the path way was an occasion for positive emotion.— Brighton Herald. CRICKET IN SCOTLAND. DUMBARTONSHIRE v.
