2 8 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . YORKSHIRE v. NOTTS. Played at Sheffield on July 18, 19 and 20. Drawn. The home side occupied the wickcts for the whole of Monday, and during the five and a-half hours play was in progress scored 348 for seven wickets. Paw son, of Oxford, was unable to appear, as arranged, owing to an injury to his thumb on Saturday, and in the absence of Denton, who had sprained his ankle, Wilson reappeared with the happiest result, though he certainly took ten minutes over four hours to score 108. lie was fifth out, at 246, hit seven 4’s and offered one chance-a return to Wass when 51. Rhodes was let off four times in making 20, and it was Hirst who played the best cricket of the day. By a variety of clever strokes the last- named scored 76 out of 141 in 90 minutes, his chief hits being eleven 4’s. At the end of the day Haigh and Booth aided 55 without being parted. On Tuesday the tail wagged to some purpose, Booth and Ilaigh remaining together until they had put on 90 in just over an hour, and the latter and Radcliffe adding 5S in 25 minutes without being parted. The innings was closed with eight wickcts down for 441, made in 6 hours 25 minutes. Haigh batted for an hour and three-quarters for 81 not out, hit a 5 and nine 4’s, and was missed twice. Notts lost Gunn (G.) Hardstaff and Payton for 10, after which Gunn (J.) and Jones put on 63 together. The latter made his 47 out of 73, giving a very bright display. Gunn (J.) and Alletson added 91 for the sixth wicket, the former then being bowled for 76, made by capital cricket in 165 minutes. After he left the innings was quickly finished for 212, Myers bowling with effect. In the follow-on Notts lost Jones at 11, but Gunn (G.) and llardstaff took the total to 50, when defective light caused stumps to be drawn. On Wednesday Gunn (G.) was caught at the wicket at 74, when his stand with Hardstaff had realised 63 in just over an hour. A t a quarter to one rain commenced to fall and caused the game to be abandoned. Score and analysis:— Y o r k s h ir e . Rhodes, c Jones, b Clifton ...................20 Wilson (B. Owing to rain not a ball could be bowled in this match on Monday, but on the following day con siderable progress was made with the game, nine teen wickcts going down for 298 runs. Northants went in first after winning the toss, and in just over three hours were dismissed for 134. Smith and Thompson by rather slow cricket put on 80 for the fourth wicket, and apart from Wells (who made 10 not out) were the only players to reach double figures. Kent were given a useful start by Dillon and Humphreys, who obtained 61 in 50 minutes, but three wickets afterwards fell for 8 runs, and it was due chiefly to a stand of 59 by Hooman and Day that Kent led by 30 runs at the end of the day with a wicket in hand. On Wednesday, thanks to Blythe (who hit East for 13 in an over), Kent obtained a lead of 50, which appeared likely to prove a winning advantage when Northants lost Pool at 6, Seymour at 15 and Smith at 28. East and Thompson then played very steadily—the right game in the circum stances-and put on 87 for the fourth wicket. Then followed a series of missed catches, the result of which was that Kent’s chance of a win was sadly discounted. Blythe obtained his 100th wicket of the season, but the visitors got the game so well in hand that they were able to declare with eight wickets down. Humphreys, Dillon and Hooman were quickly dismissed, and, when 83 had been made for three wickets, rain caused the game to be given up. Score and analysis:— First innings. C. J. T.
