J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 283 SURREY v. SUSSEX. Played at the Oval on July 18, 19 and 20. Drawn. There was very heavy rain during Monday morn ing, and although it ceased about one o’clock the wicket had no chance of drying, and at half-past four it was decided to postpone the start until eleven o’clock on Tuesday. On the second day the ground was at times difficult and always slow. Sussex went in first after winning the toss, and in three hours and three-quarters were dismissed for 190. At one time a small total appeared likely, for half the side were out for 57. Cartwright and Cox, however, added 34 and the latter and Leach 70. The best thing seen during the day was the batting of Hayward, who, driving splendidly, made 100 of the 180 made for four wickets, and carried out his bat. With Hayes he added 57 in half-an-hour, and with Ducat 118 in 85 minutes. On the third day Hayward was bowled when he had made 115 out of 214 iu 105 minutes. He played a much freer game than usual and among his hits were fifteen 4’s. When 77 he was missed off Relf (A. E.) and with 100 to his name offered Killick at point the easiest of catches. The policy of the side was to make runs quickly, and the captain set his men a fine example, among his hits being a big drive for 0 off Cox. Abel also drove well, and when Hitch and Strudwick had added 46 in 27 minutes the innings was closed. Sussex, 162 behind, made a good start when they went in the second time, Vine and Cartwright scoring 59 for the first wicket in 75 minutes. The Surrey fielding was very good, and Smith more than once missed the wicket by a hair’s breadth. Slow play followed, but at 89 Vine was bowled, and 17 later the younger Rclf foolishly ran himself out. Cox made only a couple, and, when Killick was bowled without a run, half the wickets were down for 113. At 122 rain stopped play, and, as the conditions did not improve, it was decided at 5.45 to abandon the game. Score and analysis:— S u ss e x . First innings. Vine, b A b el.......................... GLOUCESTER SHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on July 18, 19 and 20. Warwickshire won by nine wickets. Matters went so much in favour of the home side on Monday that at the end of the day they found themselves 34 runs on with seven wickets in hand. Gloucestershire batted three hours for 179, the only stand being made by Mills and Langdon ; the former scored 5S out of 156 in 160 minutes, and the lattei 55 out of 93 in 75. Mills, first in, was ninth out, and in his very steady innings hit only two 4’s. Lang don, on the other hand, drove well and made six 4’s. After Warwickshire had lost Kinneir at 4, Lilley and Charlesworth put on 66 for tho sccond wicket, and the latter and Quaife 103 for the third. Charles worth made his 105 out of 165 in 105 minutes, and took his score from 50 to 100 in 20 minutes. He hit a 6 and thirteen 4’s, and the only faulty stroke he made was to Miller when 32. On the second morning it became known that Jessop, who had injured himself whilst fielding on the previous day, had decided to take no further part in the match. Warwickshire took their total to 302, Quaife not being dismissed until he had made 90 in 170 minutes ; he hit a dozen 4’s. The visitors, although without Jcssop, gave an improved display in their second innings. Board and Huggins added 68 together after Langdon’s dismissal at 38, Huggins batting for two hours and a-quarter and scoring 65. War wickshire, set 95 to win, made 7 without loss by the end of the day. Yesterday the remaining runs were made for the loss of Field, Warwickshire winning accordingly by nine wickets.
