2 7 8 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . WORCESTERSHIRE v. MIDDLESEX. Played at Worcester on July 14, 15 and 16. Drawn. As the result of some very bright cricket, 447 runs were made on the opening day for the loss of eleven wickets. Runs came at a good pace throughout, and, after Bowley had played-on at 26, Pearson and Arnold put on 94 together and the latter and G. N. Foster 72. Arnold made his runs in two hours and a-quarter and hit a 5 and nine 4’s Burns batted 115 minutes and reached three-figures for the first time during the season. He hit sixteen 4’s in his 104 and offered no chance. By the time stumps were drawn Middlesex had made 44 for the loss of Tarrant. The visitors batted for the whole of the second day, and headed their opponents’ fine total by eight. Crutchley played very well indeed for an hour and a-half, and Hearne (J. W.) stayed with Warner for a couple of hours, playing very sedately for 37. It was, however, the stand of Warner and Anson which changed the aspect of the game, the two during the two hours they were together putting on 155 for the seventh wicket. Anson, in making his highest score for Middlesex, hit ten 4’s, and Warner during the four hours and three-quarters he was in made sixteen 4’s and five 3’s. The latter obtained his runs without offering a real chance. The heavy scoring was continued on Saturday, and during the three days 1,256 runs were made for 34 wickets. Pearson played a very fine innings, and made his 113 in two hours and a-half without a chance. Arnold did not make a run until he had been in for lialf-an-hour, and, of the 52 added for the second wicket, made only 12. Turner also was slow, taking 45 minutes to obtain his first 5 runs. Middlesex were left with 282 to make in about two hours. No attempt was made to obtain the runs, bvit some good batting was shown by Hendren and Robertson, who put on 71 together for the third wicket. Score and analysis :— W orcestershire . First innings. D E R B Y S H IR E . P layed at N ottin gh am on July 1 4 ,1 5 an d 16. D raw n. Some very interesting play was seen in this match on Thursday last, fourteen wickcts going down on a good pitch for 401 runs. Derbyshire made 153 for four in response to a total of 248. For their useful' score, Notts were indebted very largely to three men, George Gunn, Payton and John Gunn making 201 of the 231 scored by the side from the bat. The two first-named put on 97 in 75 minutes and Payton and John Gunn 83 in 55. Payton batted very well for 130 minutes and hit a dozen 4’s. Morton, put on at 201, took five wickets for 18 runs, and in the innings seven for 90. Derbyshire were given a good start by Needham and Morton, who scored 84 before they were parted, and when play ceased four wickets were down for 153. On the second day a lead of 104 wa3 obtained on the innings. Sale and Warren put on 60 together, Sale and Oliver 69, and Forester and Chapman 74. Sale hit eight 4’s during the 100 minutes he was in, and Forester, who carried out his bat for 65, a 6 and five 4’s. At their second attempt Notts made 209 for four wickets, notwithstanding that both Jones and Hardstaff were out for 46. George Gunn played another fine innings, and with Payton added 52 in 40 minutes, and with Gunn (J.) 74 in an hour. At the end of the day four men were out for 209 (Payton 66 not out). On Saturday the last-named was lbw with 47 added, the stand for the fifth wicket having realised 84 in 80 m inutes: he offered no chance and batted for 185 minutes. Iremonger was in for three hours for 69, and put on 99 whilst in with Alletson. Derbyshire were left three hours in which to make 303. For a time the bowlers proved so successful that six men were out for 92. At that point Derbyshire were in danger of defeat, but Chapman and Sale saved the side by putting on 93 together without further loss. Score and analysis:— N otts . First innings. Second innings. A.
